Denver Broncos 16 vs 19 Los Angeles Chargers summary: stats and highlights | NFL Week 6
The Los Angeles Chargers won an ugly game filled with penalties and field goals to close out the Week 6 slate. Dustin Hopkins kicked the game winning field goal in overtime to give the Charger the 19-16 win over the Denver Broncos.
We have come to expect slow, uneventful games when ever the Broncos take the field. Their defense is one of the best in the league, but Denver’s dreadful offense can turn any game into a slow, grind it out sort of game. And that’s exactly what Justin Herbert and Los Angeles did.
Denver loses another ugly one
There were 19 combined penalties and seven made field goals in the offensive struggle from Sofi Stadium.
Denver’s offense actually came out looking efficient on the air and the ground. Wilson started the first quarter 10/10 and lead scoring drives on two fo the first three Broncos possession. The opening drive was capped off by a Brandon McManus field goal, and then two deep strikes to Jerry Jeudy and Greg Dulcich for a touchdown put the Broncos up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Chargers would respond with their only touchdown of the game on the next drive. It was a 15 play, clock eating drive that took the wind out of Denver’s sails after Austin Ekeler punched in a six yard touchdown to make it 10-7 in the second quarter.
Battle of the kickers
The field goal battle would start after each team found the end zone just one time. Both LA and Denver would add field goals before half time to make it 13-10 at the end of the half, but then Denver’s offense flat lined.
The Broncos would gain just 60 yards in the second half, and their only points after halftime would come after a Baron Browning interception in LA territory. The McManus field goal give Denver the lead after the Chargers opened the half with a field goal to tie it up momentarily.
Dustin Hopkins, who missed last week’s game against the Browns because of an injured hamstring said he felt a pop on the PAT early in the game, tied the game up with his third field goal with under four minute to go.
Williams muff sets up Chargers game winner
The game went into overtime as neither team threatened to score at the end of regulation. The awful offense continued on both sides of the ball as we started the overtime session with four straight three and outs.
It wasn’t until a muffed punt from Montrell Williams gave the Chargers the ball at the DEN 28. Four plays later Hopkins would drill his fourth field goal of the night to move the Chargers to 4-2 on the year, while the Broncos drop to 2-4.
HOPKINS IS THE HERO IN LA TONIGHT!!!
Hopkins with the game winner despite the injured hamstring. He was 4/4 on the day including the 39 yard game winner.

Hopkins was the hero in LA tonight. He missed last week with a bad hamstring, felt good coming into tonight, but said he felt a pop on the first extra point of the night.
He still went 4/4 the rest of the way and had the game winner after the muffed punt.

HOPKINS WINS IT ON A BUMMED LEG!!! The 39 yard field goal was true, and the Chargers improve to 4-2 after the kicker's fourth field goal of the game.
Herbert backing out of pressure and finds Williams for 9 yards over the middle!
It's not enough for the first down, but they are in field goal range after that completion. Again, Hopkins is injured but will have a chance to win it.
Ekeler on the toss to the left and he's stopped behind the line of scrimmage again!

A blocker was pushed into Washington and the punt hit off of his thigh and LA recovers at the DEN 28!
A false start backed the Chargers up to 3rd and 15 and Herbert goes over the middle to Ekeler who picked up just 6 yards.

Singleto was in the face of Herbert and deflected it and the Chargers are lucky that wasn't picked.

4th down coming up and the Broncos will punt. They have just 1 first down on their last four possessions.
Murray again up the middle, and he gets a yard.

Herbert was getting dragged to the ground when he let the ball go and his pass to Palmer is well short.

Williams made a great catch on the sideline deep down the field, but couldn't get his second foot down.

Denver will start the drive from the 25 yard line. This is their second straight overtime game. They will be hoping this turns out better than lat year.

Herbert's pass was short of the end zone and incompelet and WE ARE HEADED TO OVERTIME!!!
Herbert got rid of it backing up looking for Horvath but he is stopped for no gain.
4th and 1 and Herbert will stay on the field with a second left looking for a last second Hail Mary.
Everett on the shallow out route and he breaks a couple tackles to get out of bounds and bring up a 3rd and 2.
33 second to go and the Broncos take a time out with the play clock winding down.
Herbert finds Palmer on the right side for a 4 yard gain before he setps out of bounds.

Herbet to Ekeler again and he will pick up the first down with a 6 yard gain. 1st and 10 from the LA 36.
Short pass to Ekeler out of the backfield and that is good for 5 yards.

Herbert was wrapped up by two defenders but pitched it to Ekeler to at least avoid a sack for no gain on the pitch.

Blitz up the middle and it's Tranquil dropping Wilson on a nin yard sack!!!
LA will get the ball back after the punt on 4th and 15.

Wilson was weaving around traffic but threw it away and will live to see 3rd down. Good play from Wilson not to take a sack or force a dangerous pass.

This used to be Wilson time, but in Denver things haven't worked out that way.

Hopkins drills the 35 yard field goal to tie the game up at 16 with just under 4 minutes to go in the game.
This one is coming down to the wire here in LA.
DEN came with the blitz and Herbert heaved up a prayer to the corner of the end zone but it was thrown over the end zone. . LA will settle for a field goal try.
Ekeler couldn't handle the pass that was a bit too far out in front of him.

Herbert rolls right and looks for Palmer, the pass was broken up but the flag flies for pass interference on Mathis. That's his fourth PI penalty of the night.

Herbert tucks it and gains five yards bringing up a 3rd and 8 from the DEN 25.
Herbert with a dump down pass to Ekeler but the Broncos were all over that and they drop him for a loss of three.

Michel with a powerful run to pick up the first down on the 6 yard carry. An unnecessary roughness penalty on DEN will give the Chargers the ball at the DEN 27.
Ekeler wrapped up right at the marker and the refs mark the ball short of the first down.

Come back route for Everett who spun and stretched to make it 2nd and 1 after a 9 yard gain.

On the first play of the drive Herbert goes over the middle and the ball popped up in the air off the hands of Everett and it's picked off by Browning!! He fumbled on the return but recovered the ball and DEN will take over from the LA 30.
Wilson saw blue jerseys all over, stepped up in the pocket and under hand flipped it to Boone, but the pitch was incomplete and the Broncos will punt.

Michel out of the backfield, turns up field and gets 7 yards on the catch and run and the Chargers will go for it on 4th and 1 from the DEN 28, but it wll come on the other side of the quarter change.

Herbert saw the pressure, escaped the pocket but had no one open down field so he threw it away.

Herbert left Ekeler in no mans land on the pass to the flat and he got crushed, he gets up slow but looks to be ok.

Nine yard return on the punt for Carter and the Chargers will have the ball at their 30 looking for their first lead of the game.
Chargers bring the blitz and there was no escaping for Wilson. Loss of 11 and the Broncos will have to punt on 4th and long.

Herbert finds Palmer in stride over the middle and he got stuck at the end of the play, but not before gaining 14 yards.

Wilson started off red hot, and got the offense moving down field in a hurry with this pass to Jeudy for 37 yards.
Wilson is 12/17 after a 10/10 start. He's got 173 yards and a touchdown thorugh 30 minutes. The run game hasn't quite taken off for DEN just yet, they have 17 total rushing yards.
Herbert is 17/24 for 120 yards. Ekeler has 20 yards and a TD on seven carries.

McManus puts the Broncos up by 3 with a 27 yard field goal as the half comes to a close. They will get the ball back after the break as well, and that is one of the best halfs of football we have seen from Denver.

Herbert back to Everett for the third time this drive, and after a generous spot they get a first down on the 5 yard reception.

Michel is stopped for no gain on first down, and then Herbert finds Carter on the left side for 5 yards.

The Broncos got to Herbert who was lucky not to fumble, Browning went for the strip sack, and just missed the QBs hand.

McManus, who has been the MVP of the Broncos to this point of the season, come on and hits the 51 yard field goal to give Denver the 3-0 lead with 7:20 to go in the first quarter.

They can't get into the habit of settling for 3 points against this potent Chargers offense.

On third down a flag flies and this time it's against the Chargers. Wilson was looking for Sutton, but was interfered with by Jackson.

Another false start on the most penalized offensive team in the league. Denver is now facing 3rd and 14 from their 17 yard line.
Wilson finds his favorite target Sutton for a 9 yard gain to make it 3rd and 9 from the DEN 22.
Gordon gets two yards on 1st and long. He will be getting the majority of the carries tonight.

Gordon picks up 4 yards, but a holding call against Cushenberry will back the Broncos up to the DEN 11.

Here comes Russell Wilson and the struggling Denver offense, starting their drive from their 21.
They could set the tone with a scoring drive to start the night.

The Chargers are a 4 point favorite at home, with the Over/Under set at 45.5. I think today is the day the Broncos offense shows up to play. I have thought this before, but at one point or another Wilson has to get these guys on track. I'm taking the over tonight in SoFi Stadiu.
Sleepless since Seattle
Russell Wilson came into Denver and the Broncos became instant Super Bowl contenders, but the first month of the season has not gone to plan for Wilson or his receivers. Wilson is averaging 250 yards and has just 4 TDs and 3 INTs. The guy who took Wilson’s spot in Seattle, Geno Smith is averaging 250 yards and has thrown 9 TDs and just 2 INTs.
Ekeler eyeing another big night
Austin Ekeler shared a tie for most the NFL is touchdowns last year with 20 TDs. He had yet to explode this year until last weeks game in Cleveland. In a game where the Chargers were going up against the league’s best running attack, Ekeler had 173 yards and a TD on the ground and 26 yards and a TD through the air.
The Denver offense which was anticipated to be one of the top units in the league with the addition of Russell Wilson over the offseason comes into tonight ranked last in the NFL. They are scoring a league low 15 points a game, and are worst in the league once they get into the red zone. The Broncos have scored TDs on just 21.4% of their trips inside the 20.
Well rested Broncos
This week was the first of the new season to feature byes, and while the Broncos did't have the week off, they are coming into this game after an extended rest. Denver takes the field tonight, 10 days after they last played two Thursdays ago when they lost in overtime to the Colts.
Mack is back at Sofi
Khalil Mack almost had to walk sideways through the door because his shoulders are so big. He is the anchor of the Chargers defense and it'll be up to him to keep the Broncos offense quiet tonight in LA.
Courtland coming into Sofi
Courtland Sutton has been Russell Wilson’s favorite target since arriving in Denver, and they will need their stud receiver to show up tonight in a big divisional clash tonight from Sofi Stadium .
LA's last game
The Chargers traveled east and came out of Cleveland with a win last week. They had to battle back from a two touchdown first quarter deficit to beat the Browns and they did so on the shoulders of their running back Austin Ekeler, who had 173 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. The Browns had a couple chances to win the game but LA came up with a red zone field goal, and then Cleveland kicker Cade York missed a last second field goal and the Chargers moved to 3-2 on the year.
