Detroit Lions’ Dan Campbell gave a goosebump worthy speech after defeating Kansas City Chiefs. What did he say?
After defeating the defending Super Bowl champions in the opening game of their 2023-24 campaign, the Detroit Lions’ coach was understandably fired up.
While it’s only Week 1 of the new NFL regular season, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to give a nod to the Detroit Lions - one of last season’s worst teams - after they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. The word ‘upset’ doesn’t begin to cover it.
The Detroit Lions & Dan Campbell are ‘built for this’
Even if you didn’t catch the game, it’s highly unlikely that you haven’t heard that the Detroit Lions won the opening game of their 2023-24 NFL regular season against the defending Super Bowl champions, Kansas City Chiefs. Now, while you might be saying, ‘It’s no big deal’ as clearly these are early days, it’s worth noting that the Lions are a team that finished last season with a 9-8 record in NFC, which to be clear was not good enough to secure a trip to the postseason. That’s to say that ‘Yes, it’s a big deal.’
With this in mind, one can appreciate the Lions and their head coach, Dan Campbell were duly pumped up post-game. Indeed, Campbell gave a scintillating speech in the team’s locker room post-game and though he was hoarse from the evening’s proceedings, his words were no less poignant. That’s precisely why his discourse has since gone viral across social media. To be fair, Campbell has been a fan favorite throughout his career with his high-energy but relatable approach, and we’re sure his latest contribution to meme culture will be no less endearing. “Now let me ask you this: Did we expect to win that game?” Campbell asked his team, to which the response was a resounding “Yes!” “That’s exactly what we did, because we’re built that f—ing way! I told you guys, we’re built for this. We can overcome anything, as long as you guys just f—ing hang with it.”
What’s next for the Detroit Lions?
Following their tight 21–20 win, there are of course high expectations going forward, and whether you’re skeptical or not you can admit that the reason is understandable. Regardless, the Lions showed on opening day that they can play football as they put down last season’s best team, a side that’s led by star quarterback and the 2022 league MVP, Patrick Mahomes. Now, the question that remains for Campbell and his men is whether they can continue to do the same to the rest of the teams that they will face this year. Up next? The Lions will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, September 17th, at 1:00 p.m. ET.
