Detroit Lions 21 vs 20 Kansas City Chiefs summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 1

The Detroit Lions started their regular season campaign with an impressive win over the defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs in from Kansas City.

The Detroit Lions proved that the hype is real in the Motor City after going into Arrowhead Stadium and taking down the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Jared Goff had 253 yards and a TD, but it was rookie Bruce Branch’s pick six that made the difference in the Lions 21-20 win.

Goff and St. Brown's special connection

The Lions landed the first blow after Dan Campbell went into his bag of tricks early in the game. Detroit faked a punt on 4th and 2 from inside their own 20 and that sparked a touchdown drive that was capped off with a nine yard Amon-Ra St. Brown catch to put the visitors on the board first.

The Chiefs would respond, led by their reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes, but they were without the heart and soul of their offense, Travis Kelce who hyperextended his knee earlier in the week. Mahomes and KC took a quarter to get the wheels moving but a one yard TD pass to Rashee Rice tied the game up early in the second quarter.

Mahomes would put the Chiefs in the lead right before the half with a six play, 83 yard drive that ended with a sidearm sling to Blake Bell to give the home side a 14-7 advantage with under a minute to go in the second quarter.

Mahomes first INT in season opener

The Chiefs seemed to be in control after the late TD to end the first half, and getting possession to start the third quarter. Mahomes had his team moving down the field, but a disastrous night for Kadrius Toney was highlighted by his dropped ball that led to a Bruce Branch pick six to tie the game up early in the third quarter.

The interception, even though he had nothing to do with it, was Mahomes’ first in a season opening game. He went into Thursday night with 18 TD passes and 0 INTs. The Chiefs offense came to a stand still with no Kelce, and they had to settle for just two Harrison Butker field goals in the second half which put them up 20-14 momentarily.

On the following possession David Montgomery would lead his team down the field on a long drive that chewed up some clock and eventually put the Lions in the drivers seat. Montgomery punched the ball in from eight yards out in his Detroit debut and put the visitors up 21-20.

Lions hype is real

The Chiefs had a couple different cracks at tying the game back up, but would go three on out on their next series, and turn it over on downs in four plays on their final series.

There has been a lot of talk about this Detroit Lions squad after they won 8 of their last 10 to finish off last season. This win will only increase the hype around this team in the Motor City.

as.com

Montgomery pushed the pile into the endzone for the go ahead touchdown mid way through the fourth quarter. He went for 74 yards on 25 carries and had a couple big runs late on to help seal the game for the Lions.

as.com

Before this pass, Mahomes had 20 TDs and 0 interceptions in season openers, but this pick six taken back by Bruce Branch turned the tides for the Lions.

as.com

In the absence of Travis Kelce, Blake Bell and Noah Gray stepped up. Blake had this 4 yard TD reception right before half, but the absence of Kelce was evident, especially on third down.

as.com

The Chiefs took a quarter to get the offense going, but Mahomes and Co. found their groove in the second quarter. He hit Rashee Rice for the first of two TDs before the halftime break.

as.com

Amon-Ra St. Brown is looking more and more like the go to receiver in the Motor City. He and Jared Goff connected on 6 passes fro 71 yards and a TD.

as.com

Going into Arrowhead and coming out with a win is never an easy things. Sometimes you have to go deep into your playbook to come up with a surprise or two to keep the defending champs on their toes. Dan Campbell went for it on 4th and 2 inside his own 20 in the first quarter, and the Lions would scored the first TD of the game as a result.

Tonight's odds

The Chiefs come into tonight as the favorites at home to kickoff the season. They are 4.5 point favorites and the Over/Under is 53.5.

I´m going with the Chiefs giving points to the Lions tonight from Arrowhead. KC knows what it’s like to play these prime time games to start the season. The Lions are an up and coming team, but I still think they have a lot to learn. If they lose tonight, it´s not the end of the world.

One thing to look for is the over. I like it, but shied away from taking it. Both of these teams are used to putting up a lot of points, and neither has a particularly dominant defense. The only reason I hesitate, is because it is the first game of the regular season and the offenses might not be running as fluidly as they will be in a few weeks time.

Chiefs season opening success

The Chiefs have been the reference point in the NFL over the last half decade, and they have done so be starting off the season in style. Even since before Patrick Mahomes was the man in KC the Chiefs were opening their season in winning fashion. They are on an 8 year winning streak in Week 1´s dating back to 2023. For the last five seasons, Patrick Mahomes has been under center and in those five season openers, Mahomes has thrown for 1,542 yards and 18 TDs and has yet to throw a pick in any of those games. In his five year career, the Chiefs gunslinger has only lost three games in the month of September.

Hutchinson ready for year two

Aidan Hutchinson very quickly became one of the leaders of this Detroit defense in his rookie season. It’s true that the Lions were far from the best defensive teams in the league, but it’s not because of the former Michgan Wolverines´ rookie campaign. He had 9.5 sacks, and was a constant threat to opposing quarterbacks. He has been battling an ankle injury over the last few weeks, but will be available for the Lions tonight, which will make life difficult for Patricks Mahomes.

Kelce to miss the open

Everyone knows that the Chiefs run on the motor of Patrick Mahomes, but if it wasn’t for his arsenal of weapons around him, the well oiled machine that is the KC offense might not run as smoothly. Mahomes´ favorite weapon for the last few years has been Travis Kelce, who has been Mr. Reliable for Kansas City and Mahomes. ·Every time the Chiefs need a big play, or a third down conversion, Kelce somehow gets open despite everyone in the stadium knowing that the ball is going to him. Unfortunately for KC, the TE hyperextended his knee in practice on Tuesday and has been ruled out for tonight's season opener.

Sky high expectations in the Motor CIty

Jared Goff has always been touted as one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the NFL, but last year he combined that accuracy with an incredible touchdown to interception ratio and was the principal reason for the Lions midseason turnaround. Last season he passed for 4,438 yards, 29 TDs and just 7 INTs. This is a team that now believes they can be a contender, and with a QB like Goff under center Detroit should be on a lot of people’s radar coming into this year.

MVPatrick is back in the building

It was a busy offseason for Patrick Mahomes, who was seen in Miami enjoying the F1 Grand Prix in South Beach and starting the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, all the while shooting a few more commercials for State Farm and Subway. After a winning the MVP last year, he will be looking for a back to back MVP bid and a second straight Super Bowl which would put him into a rarefied air. Only four players have ever won back to back MVP´s and Joe Montana was the only one to do so while while winning back to back Super Bowls.

Lions last year

Detroit had one of the most incredible midseason turnarounds we have seen in the NFL. After starting the season 1-6, Dan Campbell´s team made a remarkable surge to find themselves fighting for a playoff spot in the final week of the regular season. They went 8-2 in their final ten games of the regular season, but their Week 16 loss to Carolina is what cost them a trip to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. This year, Jared Goff and an explosive Lions offense will look to keep the momentum from the end of last season rolling into this season.

Chiefs last year

All the people who went into last year doubting the Kansas City Chiefs after they lost Tyreek Hill were made to look pretty foolish when the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl to win lift their third Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. KC won four of their first five games, and if it weren’t for a fluke game against the Colts in which the Chiefs special teams lost them the game they would have had an undefeated first month of the season.

The only other losses they suffered in the regular season were to the Bengals and the Bills, two of the other favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. After earning the top seed in the AFC they played Jacksonville in the Divisional Round and get their revenge on the Bengals in the Conference Championship. After a shootout in the Super Bowl, Harrison Butker hit a 27 yard FG with 8 seconds on the clock to secure the win and another Lombardi Trophy for the Chiefs trophy cabinet.

We are live from Arrowhead

Hello everyone and welcome to Kansas City, Missouri. The last time we saw the Kansas City Chiefs they were hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in a downfall of confetti from Glendale, Arizona. They have been the dominant force in the AFC for the last half decade and they will look to continue to be the pace setter in the conference again in 2023.

The Detroit Lions finally have something to be excited about coming into this season. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2016 and haven’t won a playoff game since 1991. This year head coach, Dan Campbell, has a team that should be geared to not just fight for a playoff spot, but could end up winning the NFC North.
