Even the most casual of glances at the sport of football should be enough to give one the clear idea that it is, by nature, a physical and competitive sport. It should come as no surprise then, that tempers can flare. Indeed, that seems to be the reasoning of the Raven’s signal caller who attempted to justify what seemed like a jab at officials.
Lamar Jackson clears the air on his comments
If you caught last Sunday’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens, then you will know that the Ravens contributed to the Cowboys’ continued misery by defeating them 28-25. Yet, one thing you may have missed was a moment when Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was heard during the game yelling, “Stop cheating us, bro!” as his team attempted to end off an apparent Cowboys comeback.
As you can probably guess, many were convinced that Jackson’s comment was directed at the referees, however, the reigning MVP has now made it clear that was not at all the case. Speaking earlier his week, Jackson stated that he was not yelling at the officials, but rather was expressing his disappointment at himself and his teammates.
“I wasn’t mad at the refs,” Jackson said. “The refs are going to do their job - they’re doing their job. Whatever they see, they’re going to call it. They only got two eyes. They can’t see everything. There’s probably holding, there’s probably all types of things happening on every play. I was like, ‘Stop cheating us,’ but I wasn’t talking to them. I’m just talking out into the world. I’m playing football. I’m trying to win. That’s all.”
Now, while debate is sure to continue as to exactly who Jackson was speaking to, we can still give him credit for addressing the issue, a sure sign that he’s aware opening that can of worms would not be in his best interest going forward. Indeed, it’s never wise in any sport to make a habit of openly questioning the integrity of those who officiate the game you play. Nonetheless, on the balance of play, one can actually see where Jackson claims to be coming from. That’s to say as much as the Ravens won, it was clear that the performance - Jackson’s included - was not up to the level that is expected of a team that made it to the AFC Championship game earlier this year.
