Did Tom Brady insult New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones?

Though he may no longer be playing, it’s clear the legendary quarterback hasn’t forgotten players who beat him, which is probably why he took a shot at one.

Did Tom Brady insult New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones?

As he prepares for a career in broadcasting, Tom Brady has been getting up to speed on his delivery and timing, things that were natural to him off the field but in the studio mean a completely different thing. To that end, the seven-time Super Bowl winner appears to have taken a misstep when speaking of the Giants’ current signal caller, or did he?

Tom Brady takes a shot at Daniel Jones

It would be fair to say that Tom Brady isn’t a guy you would expect to criticize other football players. Indeed, as competitive as Brady was in his career, he never seemed to be one who engaged in feuds with other players or outright criticism. Yet, now that he’s about to begin his next line of work as an analyst for FOX, it may be that we’re seeing another side of the seven-time Super Bowl winner. Indeed, judging by Brady’s recent comments while discussing his future in broadcasting, it seems the legendary playmaker does in fact maintain some degree of negativity toward one player in particular.

As he explained the idea that one can be critical without screaming that someone is “horrible”, Brady explained that he is conscious of what he says, admitting that he may not know what goes wrong when he sees a bad play, so he doesn’t want to be too of one specific player. That said, the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star proceeded to describe a hypothetical scenario involving a team that beat him twice in the Super Bowl - the New York Giants - and to an extent, it contradicted his earlier point.

“Let’s say Daniel Jones throws an interception,” Brady said as he used the Giants current quarterback to illustrate his point while the crowd in attendance laughed. At that point 47-year-old appeared to go on defense as he attempted to clarify, only to admit his intent. “I wasn’t even being critical of Daniel Jones,” he said before backtracking, “maybe I was a little bit.” Again, it’s interesting to note that Brady could have reasonably used any player’s name, but instead chose to use that of a player who turns out for the one team that marks a blemish on his otherwise pristine résumé

As for Jones himself, the 27-year-old has a career record of 22-36-1 with 62 touchdowns and 40 interceptions. In the six games that he played last season before an ACL tear ended it, Jones threw six picks and went 1-5 as a starter. It should also be said that Jones’ number of interceptions has decreased with each passing season year, though this most recent campaign was the most he registered since his rookie year when he threw 12. This is all to say that we imagine if/when Brady is in the booth for any Giants games, the focus will be on whether New York’s man in the middle can prove Tom Brady wrong.

Where Brady is concerned, the future Hall of Famer attempted to downplay things by stating that he “can’t just say” something was terrible on television. In response to being asked ‘why not’ Brady aired on the side of empathy. “Because there’s parents and there’s family members and I don’t want to always necessarily say it in that way. ...I just don’t want to be so critical, because in some ways I don’t necessarily know exactly what the problem was on that play.” If you’re wondering, Brady’s Fox debut will come during Week 1 when the Dallas Cowboys visit the Cleveland Browns at 4:25 p.m. ET.
