Update:

Today marks a new era in New England. Not only do they have a new coach with a second year quarterback, but Stefon Diggs has been officially cleared for a comeback after tearing his ACL last year.

Diggs get green light to return

Diggs was brought to Foxborough during the offseason as the Patriots looked to surround their franchise quarterback with weapons at the wide receiver position. He signed a three year deal with the Patriots, worth $69 million despite being in the middle of his rehab process.

The often outspoken pass catcher spent his first five seasons in Minnesota before heading to Buffalo and becoming one of the best receivers in the league. There were a lot of ups, but some downs as he and Josh Allen put up fantastic numbers, but were also involved in a few sideline dust ups which led to him getting traded to Houston last year.

Diggs joined C.J. Stroud, Nico Collins and Tank Dell in Houston and it looked like the Texans were going to be heavyweight contenders in the AFC. First Nico Collins injured his hamstring, than Diggs tore his ACL in Week 8 against the Colts and then Tank Dell suffered a devastating injury in Week 16.

Diggs makes AFC East return

Diggs has been rehabbing since then, and in that time he got a new deal with a new team in New England. Now he’s back on the field and back in the AFC East ready to help the Pats compete with the Buffalo Bills for division supremacy.

Before getting injured last year, Diggs had six straight 1,000 yard seasons and was named to the Pro Bowl four straight times from 2020-2023. He led the league in receptions (127) and receiving yards (1,535) in 2020 and was named to the NFL All-Pro First Team. Even though he’s coming off injury, he will be a welcomed addition to the Pats wide receiver room that was desperately thin in 2024.

Despite the hope that rookie QB Drake Maye brought to Foxborough in his first season in the NFL, New England’s offense ranked second to last in the league in yards per game with 291.9, third to last in points per game at 17 ppg, and the pass game ranked last in the league averaging 176.1 yards per game. A lot of that had to do with the lack of weapons at the WR position. Tight end Hunter Henry was the leading receiver with 674 yards.
