Update:

The Miami Dolphins have officially closed the chapter on Tua Tagovailoa. After six seasons marked by flashes of brilliance, frustrating injuries, and coaching turnover, Miami announced the veteran quarterback will be released with the start of the new league year.

For Dolphins fans, the news was bittersweet. Tagovailoa showed he could produce at an elite level when healthy, leading the league in completion percentage and passer rating, earning a Pro Bowl, and guiding Miami to playoff appearances. But injuries, including multiple concussions, and a turbulent 2025 season made a clean break inevitable.

Now the question is, where does Tua go from here?

Tua Tagovailoa’s options in the NFL

At 28 years old, Tagovailoa is young enough to remain a productive starter but carries a history of durability concerns that will influence his market value. Fortunately for prospective teams, much of his 2026 salary is already guaranteed by Miami, which means a new team could potentially sign him for a low-risk, cost-effective deal.

2026’s quarterback market is relatively shallow. With the upcoming draft class lacking elite QB talent and free agency offering limited proven options, Tagovailoa may be one of the more attractive experienced options available.

A team with a quarterback need might view Tagovailoa as a bridge starter or reclamation project, someone who could stabilize a roster while also holding upside if placed in the right system.

New York Jets

The Jets are widely considered a logical landing spot. New York’s quarterback situation has been inconsistent, and reports indicate the team has already done background work on Tagovailoa ahead of free agency.

From a schematic perspective, the Jets’ offensive staff has favored timing-based passing attacks, a style that has historically allowed Tagovailoa to thrive. A veteran presence could provide stability while giving the team flexibility to evaluate future options, either via the draft or through other acquisitions.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders have cycled through multiple starters since moving on from Derek Carr. While they hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and are likely to select Fernando Mendoza, there’s a real possibility the team wants a veteran bridge quarterback while developing a rookie.

Tagovailoa’s experience and accuracy in quick-read systems could provide immediate value, helping stabilize the offense in a transitional season.

Arizona Cardinals

Arizona could be another landing spot, especially since they just decided to move on from Kyler Murray. Tagovailoa’s skill set - accuracy, timing, and efficient processing - aligns with offenses built around short and intermediate passes. A fresh coaching staff could provide the structure needed to maximize his strengths.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings’ quarterback situation remains unsettled, with speculation around potential veteran acquisitions. Tagovailoa could provide a low-risk option capable of running head coach Kevin O’Connell’s timing-heavy system, buying time for the team’s long-term solution to emerge.

Why the right system matters

Tagovailoa has always excelled in schemes tailored to timing, rhythm, and short-to-intermediate reads. Miami’s system under Mike McDaniel helped highlight his accuracy and decision-making, while also compensating for limited arm strength on deep throws.

A team that emphasizes quick, pre-snap reads and fast-developing plays could unlock another productive phase in his career. Conversely, a team that relies heavily on deep-ball throws or vertical stretching of the field may find the risks outweigh the reward.

Despite setbacks, Tagovailoa’s best seasons suggest he still has starter-level talent. He has led the league in key efficiency metrics, played at a Pro Bowl level, and demonstrated leadership during playoff pushes. A team willing to accept a short-term risk could gain a quarterback who, when healthy, can be productive immediately and help set up the offense for a smoother rebuild.
