Favre: 49ers should stick with Garoppolo over Trey Lance
The legendary Packers QB explained why the San Francisco 49ers should pick Jimmy Garoppolo over Trey Lance as their starting quarterback.
The San Francisco 49ers have elected to play Trey Lance as their starting quarterback over Jimmy Garoppolo for the 2022 NFL season, but legendary Packer Brett Favre believes the Californian team has made a mistake.
In an interview with the33rdteam.com, Favre explained why he thinks the 49ers are wrong to have Lance behind center instead of Garoppolo.
“My personal opinion, I would go with Jimmy Garoppolo. He’s not as flashy, not near as flashy. He wasn’t their first-round pick. And no offense toward Trey Lance, but what Jimmy has done is win and win, win, win again. Not flashy. So, it’s not the glamorous pick, but my goodness, the guy has won and put the 49ers in a position to compete for the Super Bowl year in and year out and deserves the right to keep playing,” Favre said.
Favre highlights Lance’s potential
Favre also had positive words for Lance and pointed to the potential of the North Dakota State product but said Garoppolo’s winning ability should take preference.
“There’s a tremendous upside with Trey; no question about it. But Jimmy G. has been a proven winner. And that oftentimes gets overlooked - is a guy a winner? And Jimmy Garoppolo is definitely a winner,” said the Super Bowl XXXI winner.
Since Garoppolo arrived in San Francisco Bay the quarterback holds a 31-14 record and has accumulated 11,162 yards, 71 touchdown passes, 38 interceptions and has been sacked 97 times.
Similar destinations
Despite the difference in statistics and Super Bowl victories, both Garoppolo and Favre appear to be destined to suffer similar fates.
Favre’s last game with the Packers - before the franchise decided to hand the offensive reins to Aaron Rodgers - was the 2007 NFC Championship Game where the New York Giants emerged victorious and ultimately defeated the New England Patriots in SB XLII.
For his part, Garoppolo’s last outing was the 2021 NFC Championship Game where the Rams outscored the Niners before winning Super Bowl LVI.
