Former Packers teammate Greg Jennings suggests benching Aaron Rodgers in favor of Jordan Love, is he right?

As they begin to face the possibility that they might miss the playoffs, isn’t now as good a time as any to experiment with different scenarios?

It’s the second time in the space of a week that the notion of the reigning MVP being benched has been put forward. Could there be some rhyme to this reason?

Former Packers teammate Greg Jennings talks benching Aaron Rodgers

We can probably all agree that the Green Bay Packers have been awful across their first nine games this season. Now sitting on a record of 3-6 there have been rumblings about whether quarterback Aaron Rodgers should be benched. Indeed, that’s what former teammate Greg Jennings suggested before adding that Green Bay might want to consider giving more opportunities to Jordan Love.

During a recent a recent episode of “The Carton Show,” Jennings was asked whether the Packers should consider benching Rodgers. Speaking in the context of Green Bay’s schedule in the coming weeks, which is not kind to say the least, Jennings said that should things continue as they are, Love would need to be considered as a starter. “Of course,” Jennings said. “Sooner rather than later. Look at their schedule. In the next three games, you’ve got the Cowboys coming in this week, you’ve got the Titans coming in a few days later, and then you’ve got to go to Philly to face the Eagles. I believe, if they lose two out of these three games, which they could lose all three, it’s done. You’ve got to see what Jordan Love can do. You’ve got to give him an opportunity.

Greg Jennings isn’t the only one to question Aaron Rodgers

Though some might argue against Jennings’ position, it’s interesting to note that he’s not the first to offer up the idea of benching Rodgers and even more surprising, in the last few days. Earlier this week, Packers Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler expressed a similar idea when he said that the Packers should bench Rodgers if they lose the next three games.

“After that point, if you’ve lost those games, you’ve got to get Jordan Love in there at some point, because there’s no playoffs,” Butler said. “I mean, there’s no playoffs, you’re not in the playoffs. You have to find out at some point can Jordan Love play because you can’t get rid of Aaron Rodgers because of his contract. But you can find a way to get Jordan Love some work to just kind of find out what you’re going to have in a few years.” It should be said that Rodgers is not the only reason that the Packers are struggling, but considering that he previously criticized his teammates publicly, the fact that he’s having a terrible season really doesn’t help with optics. On the season, Rodgers has completed 64.7% of his passes for 2,091 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Where Love is concerned, he was the No. 26 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. To date, he’s played in eight games, one of which was a start. Should the Packers fail to reach the playoffs, it may just be time to see what Love’s arm is capable of.
