The Washington Commanders enjoyed the most dramatic victory of the first weekend of playoff action, seeing off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a 23-20 win.

The Commanders won the game in the dying seconds with a 37-yard kick from Zane Gonzalez that clipped the inside of the post on its way through. That win will give Washington real confidence heading into a meeting with the Detroit Lions on Saturday but they may be without a key player.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner picked up an ankle injury this week that prevented him from joining the team practice on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old NFL veteran remains a key defensive piece for the Commanders, making a crucial fumble recovery at the Buccaneers 13-yard line and a further eight tackles last weekend. Wagner, a nine-time Pro Bowler, is in his first season with Washington and has drawn praise from head coach Dan Quinn.

“He is a rare competitor,” Quinn said of Wagner after the Wild Card win. “So much of his success is unseen work. I’m in early. He’s already there. He’ll be the first one in tomorrow. I’m certain of it. He’s just that type of competitor that he doesn’t back off of it.”

“He’s very disciplined. And I think ‘disciplined’ can be seen as a negative word. But in this instance, I’m talking the focus and discipline to stay at it, like, that’s not easy to do. And he’s got incredible commitment to it. He definitely affects the other players around us, so he was the last guy to come in today, and it was cool to see everybody pumped for him.”

Wagner is not the only injury doubt for the Commanders heading into the Lions clash. Kicker Zane Gonzalez, the hero last weekend, was listed at limited on Tuesday with a hip injury. The Commanders have no other kicker in their active roster or practice squad, meaning that they will be praying for a swift recovery.
