While it’s true that football is a brutal sport, one can’t help but notice that there have been an alarming number of injuries this season so far. Of course, there are several factors in play, but the cause for concern is no less.

Giants vs 49ers latest contest plagued by injury

Injuries are coming thick and fast this season and to high-profile players no less. Mind you, we’re only at Week 3 of the 2023-24 NFL campaign. So far we’ve seen the New York Jets take the biggest blow with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in his very first game for the team. Then we also saw Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb and Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins suffer season-ending injuries as well. Let’s not forget other stars such as the Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Chargers running back Austin Ekeler, both of whom remain a doubt for their respective Week 3 games as they deal with injuries.

This of course brings us to the injury report for the Thursday Night Football showdown between the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. The Giants were able to pick themselves up in Week 2 with a close 31-28 win over the Arizona Cardinals after a Week 1 40-0 mauling at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. That said, they come into this game limping as the injury report clearly shows. The 49ers on the other hand, are in much better shape and currently sitting on a 2-0 record after downing the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2.

Saquon Barkley is a major loss

It’s plain to see that the Giants have genuine injury issues coming into this one. Not the least of which is star running back Saquon Barkley. The 26-year-old suffered an injury late in New York’s impressive comeback win against Arizona, when he received a handoff during the team’s final scoring drive. Though Giants coach Brian Daboll initially refused to rule him out, one has to believe that at such a late stage it’s unlikely that he will take the field. Indeed, it appears that caution is the best policy where Barkley is concerned. As for who will step in for him, that’s likely to be former 49er Matt Breida who will get the start against his former team.
