Here are the 6 cities with an NFL and MLB team... but no NBA team
One of the best things about living in the big city is having sports teams to cheer for year round. These six cities have NFL and MLB teams but no NBA team.
Speaking as a big city boy, one of the best things about living amongst the hustle and bustle in a major market is that there is always something going on. A team to root for. A game to go to. A reason wake up in the morning. A motive to go to bed either happy or pissed off about what your team did that day.
The lucky 12
For twelve lucky cities and twelve lucky fan bases, there are sports all year round. You could probably guess the cities that have teams with all three major sports in the US. I know hockey is the fourth major sport, but since we at AS English don’t follow hockey too much we will leave that out.
If you want to stump your buddies with a trivia question next time you’re all out at the bar, try and get them to list all 12 cities that have NFL, NBA and MLB teams. Since you’re here and reading this, we will fill you in on the answer. There are obvious ones like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philly, Dallas and D.C. The other ones are maybe a little tougher. Boston, San Fransico, Denver, Houston, Miami and Detroit are the other six. Of course all of cities are major US markets.
If you are a sports fan, having teams in the all major U.S. sports leagues is a huge plus. But here is another trivia question for you. Can you figure out the six cities in the U.S. that have an NFL team and an MLB team, but no NBA team?
Baltimore
Baltimore has had an interesting history of teams coming and going through the year. The most famous case is the Baltimore Colts who where in the city from 1953 to 1983. The team basically moved over night to Indianapolis and the city was without an NFL team until 1996 when the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore. The Baltimore Oriels were one of the eight charter teams on the American League that have been around the MLB since 1901. The city did have an NBA team for a little while. From 1947 to 1954 and again from 1963 to 1973 the Bullets played in Baltimore before moving to Washington D.C.
Cincinnati
Cincinnati, like Baltimore did have an NBA team at one point. They Rochester Royals moved to Cincy in 1957 and stayed there from 1972 before moving to Kansas City. That team is now known as the Sacramento Kings. Oscar Robertson was one of the most legendary players not just of the franchise but in NBA history. The Bengals have been in the NFL since 1967, and are still looking for their first Super Bowl title. The Reds have been institution of the MLB in the 19th century and have won five World Series titles.
Pittsburgh
The Steele City has never had an NBA team. They had a brief stint in which the Pittsburgh Ironmen played in the BAA (Basketball Association of America) in 1946/47 but the team folded after a year. The Piraters have been around since the 1880s, and like the Reds have won five World Series titles. The Steelers are one of the staple teams of the NFL. The league’s seventh oldest franchise was founded in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since then they have won six Super Bowls and are tied for the winningest team in the history of the league.
Tampa Bay
The city of Tampa Bay as never had an NBA team, but they did play host to the Toronto Raptors for a season after COVID. There have been talks about opening up a franchise in the Bay, but nothing has been materialized. The Buccaneers and the Rays are one of the newer teams in their respective leagues. It’s been 50 years since the Bucs joined the NFL, and despite some early struggles, they have won a couple Super Bowls since the turn of the century. The MLB team joined the league back in 1998, and have won a couple AL Pennants and reached the championship series but have never won the World Series.
Seattle
Some of us, not all of us are old enough to remember the Seattle Super Sonics before they were the OKC Thunder. To give you a little reference, Kevin Durant was drafted by the SuperSonics in 2007 and played for a season before moving to OKC. The Super Sonics were in Seattle from 1967 until 2008 and won one NBA title. Now they have the Seahawks in the NFL, and the Mariners in the MLB. The Seahawks joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1976 and since then they have won one Super Bowl, in 2013 and been to two others. The Mariners were an expansion team that joined the MLB in 1977, but the city is still looking for their first World Series title.

Kansas City
KC, as mentioned early did have an NBA team. When the franchise that is now the Sacramento Kings moved from Cincy to Kansas City, they underwent a name change. They were the Kansas City Omaha-Kings from 1972-1975, and then the Kansas City Kings from the 1975 season until the 1985 season. Since then the franchise has been in Sacramento. Despite not having an NBA team, things have been going pretty well in KC lately. Aside from being a part of the first ever Super Bowl, losing to Green Bay, in 1967, they have won four Lombardi Trophies. The first in 1969, and three over the last six years. The Royals have been in the MLB since the late 60s and won their first World Series in 1985, and got their second one a decade ago.
