Between the years 1970 and 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs only reached the AFC Championship round once, back in 1993, when they played against the Buffalo Bills and lost.
With their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes at the helm since 2017, Kansas City advances to the AFC Championship Game for the fifth consecutive season.
On Saturday, Mahomes became the first quarterback to lead his team to five conference title games before the age of 30. The 27-year-old helped the Chiefs punch their ticket back to the AFC title game after scoring two touchdowns while playing through the injury.

Chiefs’ Mahomes Conference Championship games
2018-2019 Chiefs vs Patriots
In the 2018 season, Kansas City lost 37-31 to the New England Patriots in overtime, with Tom Brady leading New England.
2019-2020 Chiefs vs Titans
The year after, the Chiefs convincingly defeated the Tennessee Titans 35-24 and clinched their spot in the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. They went on to hoist their second Vince Lombardi trophy after prevailing against the San Francisco 49ers 31-20.
2020-2021 Chiefs vs Bills
The following year, Kansas City squared off against the Bills for the second time in the AFC Conference Finals, pulling off a dominating 38-24 victory. Kansas City however lost dismally to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without scoring a touchdown in Super Bowl LV.
2021-2022 Chiefs vs Bengals
Last season, the Bengals defeated the Chiefs 27-24 in OT to clinch a Super Bowl trip, while Mahomes and Kansas City fell to 9-3 with their third consecutive loss to Cincinnati.
2022-2023 TBD
There are still two Divisional Playoff games left to be played this season: the Bengals-Bills and Cowboys-49ers before the Chiefs play next week in the AFC Championship Game. The winners of these games will then advance to their conference’s championship game on Sun., Jan 29, and the winners of those games will play in Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, February 12, 2023.
