How many times have the Chiefs reached the AFC Championship?

The Bills stand in the way of a place in the 2024 Conference finals - a situation that the Chiefs have been familiar with during the past six years.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to secure a place in the AFC Championship game for the sixth season in a row. The Buffalo Bills could scupper their plans if they win Sunday’s Divisional Round game in Buffalo. The Bills beat Kansas City 17-20 at Arrowhead stadium little over a months ago and this time they will have home support behind them. Tonight’s game will pit two of the best offenses in the league against each other. Interestingly the Chiefs, who have topped the AFC West standings for the past eight seasons consecutively, are not favorites to go all the way with the bookies, who are pushing odds of +700 compared to +390 for the Bills.

How many times have the Chiefs reached the AFC Championship game

The Chiefs finished the regular season atop the AFC West with 11-6 and brushed past the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round in temperatures of -4 and icicles forming on Andy Reid’s mustache. It could be even colder in Buffalo this evening’s Divisional round contest.

The Chiefs have made it to five AFC Championship games - led by their talisman Patrick Mahomes. Before the quarterback joined, the Chiefs had only ever reached the Championship game once - in 1993, when they played and lost 30-13 to the Bills. So in five of their six total AFC Championship games, Mahomes has been the quarterback and major contribution to their success.

The Chiefs are just the third team in NFL history to appear in five or more consecutive conference finals, and the only team to have ever hosted all five of them. The New England Patriots hold the record with eight straight AFC Championship games (2011-2018). Curiously, it was the Chiefs who broke their streak.

The Chiefs' appearances in AFC Championship games

  • 1993 Buffalo Bills 30-13 Kansas City Chiefs
  • 2018 New England Patriots 37-31 Kansas City Chiefs
  • 2019 Kansas City Chiefs 35-24 Tennessee Titans
  • 2020 Kansas City Chiefs 38-24 Buffalo Bills
  • 2021 Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 Kansas City Chiefs
  • 2022 Kansas City Chiefs 23-20 Cincinnati Bengals
