Is Robert Saleh going to be the Dallas Cowboys next head coach?

The Cowboys are in need of a new head coach. Is the former New York Jets head coach the man for the job? The franchise is certainly looking at the possibility.

It’s been quite the week for the Dallas Cowboys with now former head coach Mike McCarthy having walked away from his post. That said, there may be a solution on the horizon with talks said to be taking place between the franchise and the former New York Jets head coach.

Cowboys set to sit down with Robert Saleh

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Dallas Cowboys have requested an interview with former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh. To be clear, this is the first official interview that the franchise has requested since head coach Mike McCarthy chose to walk away from the negotiation table with owner Jerry Jones admitting he was surprised by the decision.

There were also multiple reports that indicated Jones had reached out to former Cowboys star and current Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders. Nonetheless, here we are. For the purpose of context, it should be said that Saleh was fired by the Jets in October after the team got off to a 2-3 start to the season. During his time in the Big Apple, Saleh registered a record of 20-36.

At this point, as much as we can say that the Cowboys are trying to secure a new head coach as quickly as possible, there are two things that have complicated their search. First up is the time that it took to come to a conclusion in the Mike McCarthy situation. That in turn led to the second which is to say, the franchise now faces a reality in which they can’t approach prime coaching candidates such as Detroit’s Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn until the bye week before the Super Bowl which doesn’t arrive for several weeks.

To that end, Jones and Co. will have no choice but to wait, meaning Saleh is all they can have for the moment. Now, do recall that Saleh’s last job ended somewhat chaotically after a great deal of organizational unrest, ending ultimately with his dismal. Though he can be acknowledged as a capable coordinator, the jury is still out when it comes to his coaching credentials in the NFL. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how the intended interview pans out. Watch this space.
