Update:

The long-time Steelers coach has come under fire once again following a dismal campaign that ended with a failure to get past the AFC’s Wild Card Weekend. To that end, speculation has been rife about whether he will continue.

Mike Tomlin has no comment on trade rumors

On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost their AFC wild-card round game against the Baltimore Ravens, handing them their sixth consecutive playoff loss. Needless to say, that latest disappointment has led to fans and pundits alike questioning whether or not it’s time to move on from head coach Mike Tomlin who has held his position for the last 18 years.

It should be said that those questions have been fueled by several rumors suggesting that Tomlin could be traded away from the franchise. This brings us to Tomlin’s response to said rumors and questions. “I have no message. Save your time,” Tomlin said. On the other hand, Tomlin did speak to the understandable frustration of the fans who have been waiting for playoff success for half a decade.

“I have no response to that,” Tomlin added, before expanding. “I understand the nature of what it is that we do, the attention and criticism that comes with it. I embrace it, to be honest with you. I enjoy the urgency that comes with what I do and what we do. I don’t make excuses for failure. I own it. But I also feel like I’m capable. As long as I’m afforded an opportunity to do that, I’ll continue. But I certainly understand [the fans’] frustrations. Probably more important than that, I share it.”

Despite the current situation, it’s worth noting that Tomlin has in fact achieved something that few others have which is to say that for almost two decades, the Steelers have not registered a single season under .500. Yet, there is no way to hide the fact that the team has only managed to secure one Super Bowl in that time and that was back in 2008. Nonetheless, Tomlin’s tenure is one that is defined by consistency, something that can’t be criticized such that it makes complete sense that he’s going nowhere.
