Jaguars vs Chiefs summary: Mahomes, score, stats, highlights | NFL Divisional Playoffs
Chiefs defeat Jaguars!
Chiefs advance to 5th consecutive AFC Championship Game
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 to advance to their fifth consecutive AFC Championship Game.
Mahomes' ankle injury
Mahomes suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter, but the Chiefs won despite it. Mahomes played through the pain for a few plays before ultimately coming out in the 2nd quarter and then missing the most of that quarter.
Chiefs to face Bills or Bengals in unknown location
The Chiefs await the results of the Bengals-Bills game tomorrow to find out which team they will face next week. Who wins also determines where the game will be.
If the Bills win, the AFC Championship Game will be held at Mercedes-Benz in Atlanta, a neutral site. If the Bengals win, the Chiefs will play them at home next week.
Chiefs leaders
Besides Mahomes playing on an injured ankle and hobbling the Chiefs to victory, there were some other heroes to applaud in this victory. The backup quarterback ChadHenne led the team on a scoring drive right away. TravisKelce had an incredible night as usual with a career-high 14c catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Isiah Pacheco ran for 95 yards and MarquezValdes-Scantlng scored the final touchdown that won the game.
The Jaguars played hard - just not hard enough
The Jaguars were starting to be known for their comeback victories, so it wouldn't have been too surprising if they pulled one off against the Chiefs. Just last week in the Wild Card Round, they came back from a 27-0 deficit to beat the Chargers. This week though, no such luck.
The Jaguars had two opportunities to rally late in the 4th quarter, and on both of those opportunities, they turned the ball over. Jamal Agnew lost the ball on the first attempt, resulting in a fumble recovery by the Chiefs with about five and a half minutes to go. The second ended when Lawrence threw an interception caught by Chiefs' Jaylen Watson.
With just 24 seconds left, their last-ditch effort was an onside kick, which was quickly recovered by the Chiefs.
Lawrence had a good game, finishing with 217 yards and a touchdown pass to Christian Kirk. Travis Etienne added 62 rushing yards and one touchdown. It was a good effort and in general comeback season for the Jaguars. It will end here, but it is a good sign of things to come in the 2023 season in Jacksonville.

The history of coaches Andy Reid and Doug Pederson
Chiefs coach Andy Reid is no stranger to the playoffs. He's one win away from winning his 20th post season game as head coach. If he accomplishes it today, he will be tied with Tom Landry for the second-most playofff wins in playoff history.
He is also the only coach in NFL history to take two different teams to four consecutive conference championship games (Eagles 2001-2004, Chiefs 2018-2021).
The relationship between Reid and Pederson
Last year's Jaguars coach was Urban Meyer, who was fired before the end of the season, which Jacksonville finished 3-14. New coach Doug Pederson has since taken them to a 9-8 record and the to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Interestingly, Pederson and Reid have a long history of working together.
In the 90s, Reid was the Tight Ends Assistant Offensive Line Coach and Quarterbacks Coach for the Green Bay Packers while Pederson played as backup quarterback on the team. When Reid became the Eagles head coach in 1999, he recruited Pederson for the starting quarterback position and he played nine games before being released in summer 2000.
In 2009, Reid hired Pederson as the Eagles Offensive Quality Control Coach and by 2011, he was promoted to the Quarterbacks coach where he stayed for two years. Then in 2013, Reid became the head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and hired Pederson as the Offensive Coordinator. He stayed in that role until 2015.
Of Reid's assistant coaches, Pederson is one of two who is still in the post season and one of two who have won a Super Bowl.
Up against his former assistants in the postseason though, Reid has never lost a game. In both the regular season and playoffs, Reid is 24-8 against his former assistants.
Snow is coming down hard in Kansas City!
We're just a little under an hour away from kickoff here in Kansas City, MO and the snowfall is coming down hard.

Mahomes vs Lawrence: How do they compare?
The NFL Divisional Round starts off with a quarterback matchup between Patrick Mahomes and Trevor Lawrence, and they’re not as different as they may seem.
Everything is on the line for these two on Saturday; will Jacksonville be put down again by their upcoming opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs?
Chiefs playoff newbs
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no stranger to the playoffs at this point, having taken his team to the postseason for the fifth year in a row this season and with two Super Bowls and one Super Bowl victory under his belt.
But a few of the other Chiefs players will be playing in their first-ever playoff game today against the Jaguars.
Rookies CB Trent McDuffie, DE George Karlaftis, RB Isiah Pacheco, and CB Jaylen Watson will all be playing in their first postseason game. Plus Giant first-round pick in the 2021 Draft and Chiefs playmaker Kadarius Toney will be making his playoff debut as well.
"They understand what it takes to win."
The Jaguars entered the 2021 Draft with the first overall pick and jumped on the opportunity to draft Clemson’s superstar quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
The Comeback Jags
On one hand, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four interceptions to put Jacksonville behind the Chargers 27-0 last week. On the other, he pulled off four touchdowns in the second half to not only come back, but to win the Wild Card playoff game and move on to the Divisional Round against the Kansas City Chiefs today.
This whole comeback thing is becoming a habit of the Jaguars', as they have pulled off 4th quarter comeback wins in four of their last eight games.
Of course, facing the Chiefs at home is not going to allow the Jaguars to wait until the 2nd half to play like that. They will have to start with that agressiveness right out of the gate. On that same note, the Chiefs will have to be ready to stop the Jaguars offense out of the gate.
How did the Chiefs and Jaguars end up here?
The Kansas City Chiefs won the top seed in the AFC and thus the first-round bye week. So they'll be playing in their first playoff game of the postseason when they take on the No. 4 Jacksonville Jaguars today. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is 27-6 after the bye week (including in the post season) and is 2-0 against the Jaguars coach Doug Pederson. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is 8-3 in the postseason with 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The Jaguars are the No. 4 seed in the AFC and last week, had a huge comeback win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card playoff game. They came back from a 27-0 deficit to win it 31-30 after quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdown passes. He and Travis Etienne have been the most impactful players on the team this season, but the defense had a huge role in stopping the Chargers last week.
Both teams ended the regular season on five-game winning streaks, the Chiefs with a 14-3 record and the Jaguars with a 9-8 record.
The Chiefs beat the Jaguars 27-17 in their regular-season game in Week 10. In that game, Mahomes threw for 331 yards with touchdown passes to four different receivers.
