Jerry Jones letting someone else call the shots for Cowboys on draft night?

When the Dallas Cowboys are on the clock on Thursday for the first round of the NFL Draft, there’s one person who will have a greater influence than usual.

Update:

Jerry? Jerry Jones? Owner of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry? The man who fired Super-Bowl-winning head coach Jimmy Johnson over a battle of the egos and refusal to give up control Jerry? That Jerry? Allowing someone else to call the shots? Hard to believe that one.

And yet, this is the report coming from CBS Sports writer Jonathan Jones, who says that there will be another key person in the room with a much bigger influence than is typical for the ‘Boys.

A new voice inside the Cowboys’ draft room

The Cowboys enter the NFL Draft Thursday with two first-round picks (No. 12 and 20) and a roster that needs a lot of work, particularly on defense. And new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, just 34 years old and largely unknown outside league circles, is expected to have a significant say in how Dallas uses those picks.

While the Cowboys often describe their process as collaborative, the hierarchy has traditionally been clear. Coaches contribute and scouts advise, but ownership (Jerry) drives the direction. This year, that may be changing...at least slightly.

“The influence new defensive coordinator Christian Parker will have on what the Cowboys do is significant, I’m told,” Jones wrote. “Jerry Jones believes Parker’s hire is a coup for the team, and they are listening closely to what the first-time DC has to say about these prospects.

The Cowboys have reshaped their defense this offseason, adding multiple veterans and signaling a clear intention to rebuild the unit’s identity. But free agency can only go so far. The draft is where systems take shape.

If Parker is truly influencing selections at No. 12 and No. 20, it means Dallas is allowing a first-time coordinator to help define not just schemes, but personnel. That’s a level of trust the organization doesn’t often hand out.

It would be a smart call to give Parker some say, as defensive rebuilds are not just about adding talent, but also about alignment. Players who fit a system, roles that make sense, and a clear identity that carries through the roster.

Jerry Jones is still Jerry Jones

None of this means the Cowboys have suddenly changed how they operate at the highest level. Jerry Jones still owns the final decision. And in moments that require a definitive call, history suggests his voice will carry the most weight.

But influence doesn’t have to replace authority to matter. And for perhaps the first time in a while, there are credible signs that someone else in the room is going to be shaping things.
