Cowboys linked to bold 2026 NFL Draft trade that could block NFC East rival
The Dallas Cowboys are expected to get extra petty in the 2026 NFL Draft next week, reportedly believed to be trading up to keep a pick away from a rival.

The Dallas Cowboys are never far from the headlines. And with the 2026 NFL Draft just over a week away, they are once again at the center of one of the league’s most intriguing pre-draft storylines. This time, it may involve a direct move against a division rival.
According to multiple league reports, Dallas is being closely monitored as a potential trade-up candidate in the first round, with growing belief around the league that the Cowboys could be targeting a player also coveted by the New York Giants.
There’s a belief among teams at the top of the draft that the #Cowboys, who have picks at #12 and #20, are a team to watch in trade-up scenarios, according to multiple league sources.

And if the rumors are accurate, the motivation could be as much about blocking a rival as it is about upgrading the roster.
Cowboys armed with draft capital and aggressive intent
Dallas enters the draft with significant flexibility, holding two first-round picks at No. 12 and No. 20, along with a total of eight selections overall. That gives the franchise plenty of ammunition to move up the board if the right opportunity presents itself.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz’s report that Dallas is looking to jump ahead of the Giants has only intensified speculation that the team is not just looking to improve, but potentially looking to get ahead of a specific draft-day outcome before it unfolds.
The name at the center of the speculation: Caleb Downs
While reports have not confirmed Dallas’ target, much of the league-wide buzz and mock draft discourse around the Cowboys’ range consistently circles back to one player: Caleb Downs.

Downs, the Ohio State safety, is widely viewed as one of the premier defensive prospects in the class and a “dream fit” in Dallas. He has repeatedly been projected in the top portion of the first round, well ahead of where Dallas is currently positioned at No. 12.Safety is also a key need area for Dallas, and Downs’ combination of range, instincts, and versatility has put him in that ideal fit in draft analysis tied to the Cowboys.
In other words, even if Dallas is not explicitly locked in on him, he has become the clearest speculative anchor for why a trade-up would even be considered.
A rivalry angle that raises the stakes
The Giants currently hold the No. 5 overall pick, placing them well ahead of Dallas, but not necessarily out of reach if the Cowboys decide to package premium picks to move into the top 10.
That possibility alone has fueled speculation that Dallas is more active in trade discussions than teams picking in their range typically are. And if Downs, or a similarly valued defensive prospect, begins to slide into that range, the urgency could escalate quickly.
Jerry Jones factor: never rule out a swing
Any Cowboys draft conversation inevitably circles back to owner Jerry Jones, who has a long history of making unexpected draft-day moves when he sees an opportunity.
Dallas has repeatedly signaled a desire to improve their defense and add immediate impact players, and with cap flexibility and draft capital in hand, a bold trade-up would not be out of character. As always with the Cowboys, the combination of ambition and resources keeps them in the “team to watch” category.
Nothing is confirmed, but the smoke is getting harder to ignore. Whether it’s a targeted leap into the top 10 or a calculated move to block a division rival, the Cowboys are once again positioned to shape the early chaos of the NFL Draft.
