Jerry Jones takes jab at Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, then backtracks

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones can’t stay out of the media. Mixed in with some outlandish comments on his weekly radio show, he took a jab at their coach.

In his weekly radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made more than a few attention-grabbing comments, including why they didn’t sign Derrick Henry, how his radio interviews are akin to “pillow talk”, and a subtle jab at head coach Mike McCarthy that was so quick you may not have even noticed it.

What did Jerry Jones say about Mike McCarthy?

The Dallas Cowboys are at 3-3 to start the season and before the bye week, they suffered one of their worst losses in team history at the hands of the Detroit Lions, and the worst one under the ownership of Jerry Jones.

The immediate question to Jones after the game was whether or not head coach Mike McCarthy‘s job was in jeopardy, to which he replied that it wasn’t even a consideration. He also asked a reporter whether he thought he was an idiot, which is a bold question after all the decisions he made led them to a 47-9 loss at home, but I digress. The point is, it‘s a question Jones is sick of answering and his stance is clear: McCarthy isn’t going anywhere.

At least...not yet. McCarthy‘s contract is up at the end of this year, and I would say it‘s highly unlikely that he’s up for an extension, especially not if they don’t even make the playoffs. And I hate to be a downer this early on but...the outlook is bleak.

Anyway, as the Cowboys prepare to face the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, Jones appeared on The Fan to discuss. In doing so, he took a jab both at the Cowboys offense as well as McCarthy.

“We’re designing bad plays,” Jones said, before correcting his word choice. “Or we’re designing bad concepts. The facts are there’s some of that but there’s also some of execution.”

They’re designing bad concepts of a play is what I think he meant to say there.

In addition to that comment, Jones also stated that he agrees with something former Cowboys quarterback and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman said about their wide receivers, who he said “run terrible routes”, something McCarthy earlier said he disagrees with.

“Troy knows football,” Jones said. “He lives it. Troy’s credible. And should be… He’s very professional. I think he’s very fair… I’m pretty confident that we’ve got the ability to coach and we got some receivers that take the coaching and can improve. And that’s the big thing, improve.”

Jones can talk about how not hot McCarthy’s seat is all he wants, but the steam billowing around its edges becomes more and more visible with each passing NFL week.
