Joe Montana’s jersey breaks Tom Brady’s record
The jersey worn by Joe Montana in Super Bowls XIX and XXIII sets a new record for the highest price of any NFL jersey ever sold.
Tom Brady, formerly of the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, holds every NFL quarterback record there is, apart from one. The legendary Joe Montana, famed quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, has just taken the top spot in a specific category.
Goldin, a company dedicated to the sale and auction of cards, collectibles and memorabilia, has announced that the jersey worn by Montana in Super Bowls XIX and XXIII sold for $1.212 million.
The previous high mark for an NFL jersey sold at auction was $480,000, for the uniform worn by Tom Brady during the 2021 season, his second with the Buccaneers.
Montana recounted on Goldin’s Instagram Reels how he wore the same jersey in two Super Bowls four years apart. The quarterback revealed that he was able to do it only because his wife Jennifer packed the uniform for him and wrote a note saying that she thought that he might like to wear it again.
The jersey was part of an auction that included multiple Montana personal items, including trading cards and other uniforms, such as the one from his last NFL game with the Kansas City Chiefs and the one that he used during high school.
How did Montana play in Super Bowls XIX and XXIII?
Super Bowl XIX was an epic duel between two of the best quarterbacks of the 1980s: Montana and Dan Marino. The 49ers defeated the Dolphins 38-16 and in that game 'Joe Cool' completed 24 of 35 throws for 331 yards and three touchdown passes. In addition, he rushed five times, had 59 yards and scored once on the ground.
Montana clinched his third NFL championship in epic fashion in Super Bowl XXIII. ‘The Drive’ is the name given to the 92-yard offensive drive in which Montana connected with John Taylor to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16.
