Just days into their training camp ahead of the 2025 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns lost one of their top defenders. Linebacker Jordan Hicks shocked the team by announcing his retirement during camp.
Why is Jordan Hicks retiring from the NFL?
After 10 seasons in the NFL, Hicks said he’s ready to hang up his cleats, citing gratitude for his football journey and readiness for the next phase of life. Although his statement does not explicitly state why he’s retiring now, he frames it as a personal reason, not mentioning any injuries or health concerns, or any other specific triggers for the sudden decision. He missed the first two days of training camp due to “a personal matter”, according to the team.
“After 23 years of playing football, I’m officially retiring from the NFL,” he said. “Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most important it showed me who I am outside the game. I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I’m proud of what I accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I’ve become because of it.”

At 33, Hicks was projected to compete for a starting role after contributing significantly in 2024. Throughout his career, he notched 951 total tackles, 16.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, 11 fumble recoveries, 13 interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and 53 defended passes (in 134 games).
His decision leaves a leadership and experience gap on the Browns’ defense just as the season ramps up.
