The Kansas City Chiefs got their first win of the season, but they didn’t make it easy for themselves on Sunday afternoon. They overcame three first half turnovers to hold off the Jaguars in Jacksonville as the defense held strong, not allowing a touchdown all day.

Chiefs bounce back down south

The alarm bells may not have bee ringing at Arrowhead Stadium just yet, but the Chiefs were backed into an early hole after their Week 1 loss to Detroit and having to travel down south for a tough second game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fortunately for Andy Reid’s team they got Travis Kelce and Chris Jones back after both missed the opener last week.

Each of them had their say in the Chiefs win at TIAA Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but it would take Kansas City a while to get the wheels rolling. They turned the ball over three times in the first half, but the Jags could only turn those giveaways into three points.

The Chiefs are too good of a team not to punish them on their mistakes, and the Jags were punished for not taking advantage of some great field position early in the game.

Kelce scores in return

Patrick Mahomes finally got the offense going on the Chiefs final drive of the second quarter. It was the defense who set up KC with great field position after a turnover on downs from midfield. Mahomes led a 7 play drive that was capped off by Skyy Moore’s 9 yard TD catch to made it 7-3 with under two minutes to go in the half.

Jacksonville would sneak a field goal in right before the half, but the Chiefs got the ball back on the other side of halftime and marched right down the field on their best drive of the day. It was Isaiah Pacheco who got the offense moving out of the break on a 31 yard run on the opening play of the first quarter. Six plays later Mahomes hit Kelce in the end zone to take a 14-6 lead.

Jacksonville had their best chance to tie the game up early in the fourth quarter, but would fail to punch it into the end zone after a pass interference flag gave them 1st and Goal from the 1. They would settle for a field goal, ending their day 0-3 in the red zone and that would be their last chance as KC went down the field right after that possession and stretch the lead back to eight points.

Mahomes win battle of the gunslingers

Trevor Lawerence, who went 22/41 for 216 yards, would lead the Jags inside the 20 again with under 5:00 to go in the game, but Jacksonville went for it on 4th and Goal from the 16 and Calvin Ridley couldn’t get his two feet inbounds after making the catch in the back of the end zone.

Mahomes and Pacheco would go the length of the field before a Pacheco first down run ended the game and secured their first win of the season. Mahomes finshed the game with 305 yards on 29/41 passing with two TDs and one INT.

as.com

Game respects game. Neither QB had a great game today, but both of these QBs are two of the best in the game. This may not be the last time we see there two teams and these two gunslingers meet.

as.com

The Chiefs would get the ball back to start the second half, and they scored on the opening drive of the third quarter. That was basically all they needed. The offense didn't have a great game, but Mahomes went 29/41 for 305 and 2 TDs and one INT.

as.com

Right before the half, the Chiefs started to connect on the offensive end, and Mahomes ended the drive with a nine yard TD pass to Skyy Moore.

Even the Mahomes Magic wasn't enough to overcome the slow start for the Chiefs. He threw a pick for the third turnover of the half, but the Jags couldn't make the most of any of those turnovers.

WE ARE UNDERWAY FROM JACKSONVILLE!!!

It's the Jags getting the ball first at home from a muggy TIAA Stadium.

Today's odds

The Chiefs are a three point favorite on the road today in Jacksonville with the Over/Under at 50.5.

Jacksonville giving points at home scares me a little bit, so I'm staying away from it, I'm taking the over, because I think there will be plenty of points to go around today at TIAA Bank Stadium.

KC gets Kelce back

Travis Kelce was the other big absence in the Chiefs opening week loss to the Detroit Lions after hyperextending his knee in practice leading up to last Thursday night. The Chiefs struggled to move the ball, especially in the second half, and you just had to wonder how that game would have been different if Mahomes had his favorite target available in Arrowhead last week. He was listed as questionable, but as you can see one of the best tight ends in the league is back for KC.

Jones agrees to deal

Chris Jones was a candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year last season after revolutionizing the Chiefs defense into a respected unit in the league. He was a big part of their Super Bowl title, and felt like he’s paychecks should reflect that. He held out this preseason, and into Week 1 as he sat in the suites at Arrowhead while his team lost to the Lions to start the season. It didn’t take too long for both he and the Chiefs to come to a temporary solution to get him on the field as soon as possible. He has a highly incentivized contract that could see him earn up to almost $20 million he completes certain objective throughout the season, including getting 15 sacks and winning defensive POY among others.

Divisional round matchup

Chiefs fans hearts dropped when Patrick Mahomes limped off the field with an injured ankle in the first half of the Divisional round matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After X rays came back negative, Mahomes came back in for the second half, as Chad Henne and the KC offense kept the Chiefs ahead 17-10 going into the final 30 minutes. Jacksonville closed the gap to three points early in the fourth quarter, but Mahomes made sure the Jags wouldn’t get a chance to tie the game late, orchestrating a 10 play TD drive that sent them to their fifth straight conference championship.

What lies ahead in Jax?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are without question the favorites to win their division, but they will have their sights set on much larger objectives this season. After years and years of high draft picks in the first round, the Jags are finally seeing the fruits of their labor pay off. Trevor Lawrence and Travis Ettiene have the offense moving in the right direction and last year’s top pick in the draft, Travon Walker is already one of the anchors on the defensive end. The AFC South should be a cup cake division to win, the Colts and Texans have rookie QBs and the Titans look like a team in decline, but the Jags will be eyeing a one of the top spots in the conference, and to do so, they need to win games like they have today.

Chiefs hit the road with their backs against the wall

This is unfamiliar territory for the Chiefs. For the first time in a long time they lost their season opener, and now hit the road to for a tough test against the Jags today. Kansas City has been the pole setter in the AFC for a long time, and they aren’t used to having to go into crisis mode, especially early in the season. There is a long way to go before the Chiefs fans start to worry about missing the playoffs, but two losses to open the season will certainly give the pundits something to talk about and to blow out of proportion in KC.

Jags last week

The Jags opened their season on the road in a hostile environment from a place they rarely win. It was a divisional matchup against a team in the rebuilding process, but that didn’t mean it was going to be easy for Jacksonville. Two TD passes from Trevor Lawrence in the first half had the Jags up 14-7 at the break but rookie QB Anthony Richardson and the Colts came roaring back, and took the lead on a 26 yard fumble recover for a TD late in the fourth quarter. Down 21-17, the Jags took the lead with a short touchdown run from Tank Bigsby with five minutes to go in the game. Jacksonville’s defense came up with an interception on the next possession, and Travis Ettiene Jr. closed the game out with a 26 yard TD run to start the season 1-0.

Chiefs last week

For the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs dropped their opening week game. They went into last Thursday’s kickoff to the regular season on a 5 game wining streak in Week 1, and Mahomes was previously perfect in those games. The Lions picked off Mahomes which ended his perfect TD-INT ratio in season openers, and that led to the Chiefs first loss in Week 1 for the first time since before the Mahomes era. KC led 14-7 at halftime, but the Lions defense locked up the Chiefs offense in the final 30 minutes, as Brian Branch his interception of Mahomes to the house for six points. A fourth quarter TD run from David Montgomery put Detroit up by one with seven minutes, leaving Mahomes plenty of time. The Chiefs would get two more possessions but failed to get a first down in both as they dropped to 0-1 for the first time in nearly a decade.
