Kansas City Chiefs 41 vs. 31 Tampa Bay Buccaneers summare: stats and highlights | NFL Week 4
The Kansas City Chiefs dominated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from wire to wire on Sunday Night from Raymond James Stadium. Patrick Mahomes won the quarterback battle against Tom Brady in the Chiefs 41-31 victory.
Super Bowl LV rematch
It was a rematch of the Super Bowl from two years ago, and you could tell Patrick Mahomes was itching to avenge the loss he suffered on the very same field twenty months ago.
While the headline coming into the night was the battle of the quarterbacks, the Tampa Bay offense had not been playing up to par over the first three weeks of the season. The real match up to keep an eye on was the Chiefs high powered offense against the Bucs top ranked defense.
Coming into the Week 4 encounter, Tampa Bay had only allowed three touchdowns all season. They gave up three touchdowns to Mahomes and the Chiefs in the first 30 minutes of the game.
Fumble on opening kick off sets tone
It didn’t take long for the Chiefs to get on the board. After the Bucs fumbled on the opening kick off Mahomes hit Travis Kelce on a 16 yard field goal two plays later.
The Bucs got a field goal once Brady got to take the field, but the Chiefs offense was relentless, scoring touchdowns on each of their first three drives. Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored the Chiefs second touchdown of the first quarter on a night where the KC running game went for 189 yards.
The third touchdown was simply Mahomes making magic happen. On 2nd and Goal from the two, Mahomes dodged one defender in the backfield, got to the sideline, spun out of another tackle, drew the defense and flicked the ball to Edwards-Helaire for his second touchdown of the game to go up 21-3 early in the second quarter.
Majestic Mahomes put on a show
Brady finally got the Bucs into the end zone on the next drive when he found Mike Evans, who returned from a one game suspension, in end zone for a 13 yard TD pass.
It looked like the Bucs had a way back into the game when they stopped the Chiefs on fourth down during the following possession, but L’Jarius Sneed forced a Brady fumble on a sack on the very next play.
The momentum swung back in favor of the Chiefs and Noah Gray punched in a one yard tight end sneak as Andy Reid showed he’s still got some tricks up his sleeve. The Bucs would score another touchdown right before the half to bring the score to 28-17 going into half, but the Chiefs didn’t slow down in the second half.
Chiefs O dominates Bucs D
A Chiefs field goal on their opening possession of the second half and a touchdown on their ensuing possession would put the game out of reach as the Chiefs led 38-17.
Tampa Bay would see the end zone two more times, but at that time it was merely consolation, although the Bucs may have taken one step back to take two steps forward. They could get nothing done on the offensive end coming into this week, and as crazy as it sounds a game like this could be exactly what Tampa’s offense needed.
They scored 31 points, and Brady threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns. As long as the defense plays like they did in the first three games and the offense plays like they did on Sunday night, the Bucs will be just fine.
Patrick Mahomes went for 249 yards and three touchdowns, and did throw his second interception of the season but he was nearly perfect otherwise. The Chiefs now jump to the top of the AFC West at 3-1 while the Bucs fall to 2-2 and will set their sights on next Sunday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, while the Chiefs will take on the Raiders in Aarowhead next Monday.

Will the defense be the differnece tonight?
The Chiefs defense was their liability last year, and while their numbers aren’t in the top of the league they are not losing games for Kansas City, like they did a season ago. They only have two take aways, but one of them essentially won the game against the Chargers when rookie Jaylen Waton took an interception 99 yard for a touchdown.
The Bucs have eight takeaways which is tops in the league, and they are tied for first in fumble recoveries (3), and tied for second in interceptions (5). What’s even more impressive is the Chiefs are only allowing 9 points a game.
When will Bucs offense come to life?
The Buccaneers have had a slow offensive start to this season, they are 24th in scoring offense (17 points per game), 22nd in passing offense (211.3 yards per game), and 25th in rushing offense (86 yards per game). Tom Brady was one of the favorites to the MVP this year, but his numbers are well below his norm. The blame doesn’t fall all on the No. 12’s shoulders, his offensive line has been dreadful to start the season. Is tonight the night that Brady and the Bucs turn on the offense?
Top tier quarterbacks under the lights tonight
Brady and Mahomes have squared off just twice, and each has a win to their name, although Brady got the all important win in Super Bowl LV a couple years ago. This year Brady has just three touchdowns and 673 yards through three games. Mahomes has 857 yards, eight touchdowns and just one interception.
Last meeting between these two
The last time the Bucs and the Chiefs met was in the Super Bowl two years ago. The Bucs won that game 31-9 as Brady won his seventh ring and his fifth Super Bowl MVP. The Bucs defense stopped Kansas City’s high powered offense, limiting the Chiefs to just three field goals all game. Brady had just 201 yards passing but threw three touchdowns as the Bucs cruised to victory.
Hurricane Ian
All eyes were on Hurricane Ian as the Bucs prepared for this massive early season match up against the Kansas City Chiefs. It was announced that if the game couldn’t be played in Raymond James Stadium, then the Sunday Night matchup would have been moved to Minnesota. Tampa Bay was lucky to avoid the full force of the storm, and the game will be played from the Bucs home stadium as the city is still feeling the affects of Hurricane Ian.
Bucs back home after long week
There were plenty of questions about where this game would be played, but Tom Brady and the Bucs were not forced to relocate for this game after Hurricane Ian hit south of Tampa, saving the city from the brunt of the storm .
KC is in the building
The Chiefs come into Raymond James Stadium looking to get back into the win column, and it’ be on this man’s shoulders to right the ship. Patrick Mahomes threw his first interception of the season on the final play of the game last week.
Chiefs last week
Kansas City dropped their first game of the season to the previously winless Indianapolis Colts last week. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense had an off day, but it was the special teams that lost the game for Kansas City. The game started off with a muffed punt that led to a Colts TD in the first three minutes of the game. Then the Chiefs fake field goal attempt failed in at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Five minutes later, with a four point lead, the Matt Ammendola missed a field goal that led to the Colts taking the late lead to drop the Chiefs to 2-1.
BUCS LAST WEEK
It’s been ten days since the Bucs last played and they have had over a week to dwell on their terrible offensive performance against Green Bay last Thursday night. Tampa Bay scored just 12 points against the Packers defense, and didn’t get into the end zone until there were 14 seconds left in the game. The Bucs defense kept them in the game, but for a third straight week the offense failed to impress.
We are live from Raymond James
