Kyle Philips injury status: Will the Titans’ WR play against the Seahawks on Saturday?

Philips was forced out of Thursday’s joint practice with a recurring injury problem. Head coach Brian Callahan gave an update on six players.

Tennessee Titans’ Kyle Philips already had something to prove ahead of the new campaign and his options of locking down a place in the regular-season roster have just taken another knock.

The 25-year-old wide receiver was one of several players who quit Thursday’s joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks. Philips and tight end Josh Whyle headed back to the locker room to get medical treatment.

Callahan gives Titans’ injury update

After the session, Titans head coach Brian Callahan told reporters that Philips had picked up a hamstring injury. “[Keondre] Coburn went in early, that’s precautionary. Josh Whyle hit his head on the ground in a one-on-one so we took him in as a precaution. No official designation on him but took him in just to be safe. Kyle Philips had a hamstring. Marlon [Davidson] had a bicep and we’re waiting to see the severity of that. Bryce Oliver had a little heat issue, he went in. And then Kenneth Murray we held out with some hamstring tightness as a precautionary, just to keep him out of the practice, so nothing serious there”.

This latest injury is a new setback for Philips, who has spent a while on the sidelines with hamstring issues in the past.

Kyle Philips’ injury history

A fifth-round pick, 163rd overall, in the 2022 NFL draft, Philips made just four appearances in his rookie season before being placed on injured reserve with a hamstring problem. A similar issue, along with shoulder and knee problems, kept him out of the tail end of last season.

In two seasons, he has missed a total of 23 regular-season games and depending on the severity of this fresh injury, it’s unlikely that he will be declared fit for the 2024 NFL regular season opener against the Bears on 8 September.

He is definitely ruled out of this evening’s preseason Week 2 clash against the Seahawks and could also sit out next weekend’s final warm-up against the Saints at Caesars Superdome.

While waiting to see how serious his hamstring injury is - whether it’s a strain or a tear, Philips will begin his rehabilitation aware that he could ultimately miss out on a place in the regular-season roster spot. With competition from Tyler Boyd, Calvin Ridley, DeAndre Hopkins, Treylon Burks and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine there may not be enough room for him.

The Titans take on the Seahawks at Nissan Stadium on Saturday 17 August with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
