Las Vegas Raiders 19 vs 24 Los Angeles Chargers summar: stats and highlights | NFL Week 1
The Los Angeles Chargers outlasted the Las Vegas Raiders in a rematch of last year’s Week 18 matchup that sent the Raiders to the playoffs. Justin Herbert passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns.
Herbert growing up before our eyes
It was one of the most anticipated matchups of Week 1, and it went down to the wire in a divisional rivalry to start the season. The AFC West is widely considered the top division in the league and these two playoff candidates showed that nothing will come easy in the division.
Justin Herbert put up fantastic numbers in his opening two seasons, and if Sunday afternoon was any indication, than the Chargers will be in good shape on the offensive end this season. Herbert was nearly perfect in the first half, and led a nice opening drive that was cut short for a field goal in the first possession of the game.
Derek Carr and Davante Adams responded and sent a warning to the rest of the league on what is to come as the former college teammates gave us a first taste of what their partnership in the NFL will look like from the first offensive snap. The Raiders got all the way down to the five yard line on their first drive, but had to settle for the field goal and would not score again until the third quarter.
Chargers stretch lead out in second quarter
Herbert and the Chargers overcame the hamstring injury Keenan Allen suffered early in the game and were able to get into the end zone a couple times before the end of the first half. Herbert found Zander Horvath on a one yard TD pass to put the Chargers up 10-3.
Two plays after the Chargers turned it over on downs later in the second quarter, they came up with an interception which led to a 23 yard touchdown catch for Deandre Carter who made a great comeback catch on the side line and backed into the end zone for the touchdown to make it 17-3 going into half.
Las Vegas came out of the break intent to tighten the game and Carr led a five-play 75 yard TD drive capped by a lob pass to Brandon Bolden to make it 17-10 just two and a half minutes into the third quarter.
Chargers D comes up big in second half
As they did all night, the Chargers punched back immediately with an 11 play drive to make it a 14 point game again after Herbert hit Gerald Everett for an 18 yard TD strike.
The LA defense stepped up after going up two scores and picked off Derek Carr for a second and third time of the night. The Raiders still had a chance late in the fourth quarter, down 24-13. With four and a half minutes left in the game Carr hit Adams for their first touchdown connection of the season, but they would miss the extra point forcing them to look for a go ahead touchdown after stopping the Chargers on the next possession.
Mack's sack put an end to the Raiders
Fittingly, it was a former Raider, Khalil Mack who sacked Carr on 4th down for his third sack of the night. The Chargers were able to run out the clock as Herbert and LA hung on for the opening day division win.
Herbert finished the night going 26/34 for 279 and three touchdowns, while Carr struggled at times passing for 295 yards for two TDs and three INTs on 22/37 passing. Davante Adams caught 10 of those passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.
The Chargers will now put their opening week win behind them as they set sights on another division opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Raiders will take on the Arizona Cardinals as both of those teams will be looking to get in the win column for the first time this season.
Carr to Adams for the TD. Get used to that, it will happen a lot. The Raiders had a half a chance after this touchdown with four and a half minutes left. They stopped LA on the next possession but couldn't get the go ahead touchdown.
Just as it seemed as the Raiders were getting back in the game after a TD in their opening possession of the second half, LA punched back with this 18 yard TD strike.
The Chargers were turned over on downs, but got the bal right back after this pick from Tranquill.
Allen went down with a hamstring injury, but Carter stepped up and took over in his place.
It took the Raiders over a half to get in the endzone but Carr found Bolden in the endzone with this beautiful touch pass under pressure.
Justin Herbert has a load of weapons around him this season, but I don't think even Horvath thought he'd be the one getting the first touchdown of the Chargers season.

Toinght's odds
According to Bet365.com the Chargers are a 3.5 point favorite at home and the Over/Under is 52.5. I like the Raiders in this game. They mean buisness this year, but will have to figure out a way to keep Justin Herbert quiet. If they can do that the Raiders win and the under hits.
Carr in the drivers seat
The Raiders quarterback is coming off of a career year after passing for 4,804 yards and 23 touchdowns last year. He led Las Vegas to their first playoff appearance since moving to Sin City, but even more admirable was his ability to carry the team on his back despite all of the off field problems last year. Now under new head coach Josh McDaniels he will have an offensive mind and a quarterback guru at his disposal along with one of the top receivers in the NFL, Davante Adams.
Herbert on the cusp on super stardom
Justin Herbert has been getting better by in each of his two years in the league. He passed for over 4,300 yards and 31 touchdowns in his rookie season and upped that to over 5,000 yards and 38 TDs last season. There is nothing but upside to the Chargers offense when Herbert is under center, and tonight we will get our first glimpse of year three for the former University of Oregon QB.
AFC west
There is not much doubt around the league that the AFC West will be the toughest division in football. Last year the Chargers were a timeout away from being the third team from the conference to go to the playoffs. This year Los Angeles are even stronger and the only team that wasn’t in the playoff picture last season was the the Denver Broncos who brought in Russell Wilson in the offseason. It’s a long shot but the AFC West could have all four teams in the playoffs this season.
LA's last season
The Chargers started off last season with plenty of expectations in Justin Herbert’s second year in the NFL. They started the year on fire winning four of their first five games but cooled down in the middle of the season. A late season loss to the lowly Houston Texans put them against the ropes, but they still could have made the playoffs with a win or a tie in the final game against the season against the Los Angeles Chargers. This season Herbert has another year of experience under his belt and some new weapons to help Keenan Allen on the offensive end.
Last season raiders
The Raider finished the regular season with a winning record after what was a tumultuous season off the field. Their head coach Jon Gruden was fired after insensitive comments were discovered in emails sent years back. Weeks later their star receivers Henry Ruggs III was involved in a drunk driving accident that killed another person. Despite all the commotion off the field the Raiders pulled to get her and finished second in the AFC West with a record of 9-8. They made it to the first round of the playoff, but we’re bounced by eventual AFC Champions, the Cincinnati Bengals.
Josh McDaniels and his squad are entering enemy territory fully focused. They were able to block out external issues last year to reach the playoffs, and will be hoping this year all eyes will be on football.
It's getting hot in LA
Keenan Allen decided on the shirtless look for Week 1 of the NFL regular season. He will be the top target for Justin Herbert today and all season, and as long as he has his receiving gloves on when on the field his QB won't care what he's wearing.
We are live from SoFi Stadium
Hello everyone and welcome to Sofi Stadium for a rematch of last year’s Week 18 game that determined the fate of both of these teams. The winner would go on to the playoffs while the loser would go home, but if a tie occurred both would have made the playoffs. The game went to overtime and the Raiders won with a field goal in the final seconds. The Chargers called a timeout in the final seconds leading up to the field goal which forced the coach Rich Bisaccia to go for the game winner although he later said he wouldn’t have had the timeout not been called.
