Leading candidate emerges to become Chicago Bears new head coach
Following the surprise sacking last weekend of Matt Eberflus, the Bears are still in the hunt for a successor.
So far the 2024-25 NFL season has seen three head coaching vacancies appear following a trio of dismissals with Chicago Bears the latest team to sack a coach after Matt Eberflus was relieved of his role with Thomas Brown drafted in as interim.
Various names have been linked with the position such Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions and Joe Brady of the Buffalo Bills. However, according to the report of NFL Network, the best placed candidate to become the next head coach of the Bears is Kliff Kingsbury, who is currently in charge of the offense of the Washington Commanders.
The former Arizona Cardinals head coach arriving in Chicago wouldn’t be a surprise for many as Klingsbury served as an offensive analyst for the USC Trojans during Bears rookie sensation Caleb Williams’ final season at the college level.
Kingsbury’s coaching experience
Although he is still only 45-years-old, Kingsbury has 17 seasons of experience as a football coach. At 29, he was put in charge of quality control for the University of Houston’s offense and in 2010, two years later, he was promoted to offensive coordinator.
His experience in Houston earned him a move to Texas A&M in the same position. His work was key to the development of Johnny Manziel, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2012. Kingsbury later joined Texas Tech and spent six years with the Red Raiders, from 2014 to 2016 with Patrick Mahomes.
His first NFL opportunity was as Arizona’s head coach and he lasted four years in the position. During his time with the Cardinals he coached 66 regular season games to post a 28-37-1 record, losing his only playoff game.
