Los Angeles Chargers 24 vs. 27 Kansas City Chiefs summary: stats and highlights | NFL Week 2

The Kansas City Chiefs trailed the the Los Angeles Chargers for three quarters, but a Jaylen Watson pick six made the difference in Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs came out on top in an AFC West battle against the Los Angeles Chargers on Amazon Prime’s debut broadcast of Thursday Night. Rookie Jaylen Watson had the game changing interception which he took 99 yards the other way for a touchdown.

AFC West showdown on Thursday Night

It was an divisional showdown between the only two teams to come out of Week 1 with a win in the AFC West. The division is widely considered the best in the league and these head to head matchups are pivotal when it comes to the end of the year and playoff positioning.

Third year man Justin Herbert came into Arrowhead Stadium 2-0 with seven touchdowns and no interceptions in his only two games in Kansas City, but his first pick six ended up leading to his first loss in the Chiefs stadium.

Herbert got off to a great start as Mike Williams was catching everything that was thrown to him. Williams would be the wide receiver the Chargers needed to step up after Keenan Allen was ruled out for Thursday’s game with an hamstring injury.

Chiefs overcome slow first half

The Chargers got the first points of the night on a Dustin Hopkins field goal on their opening possession of the game. The Chiefs offense looked a bit flat coming out of the gate after putting up nearly 500 yards of total offense in Week 1 against Arizona.

As soon as the second quarter started the Chargers took command of the game by going up 10-0 with a one yard touchdown to rookie full back Zander Horvath. The TD was set up by a 39 yard pass play to Mike Williams to get Los Angeles down to the 1 yard line.

Kansas City finally responded with a seven play touchdown drive that was capped off with a bit of Mahomes magic.  KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes danced outside the pocket, wiggled around a tackle and zinged a side arm pass to Jerick McKinnon to get the Chiefs on the board for the first time with early in the second half.

Chargers offense unplugged in 2nd half

In a game where points were expected between two high flying offensive side the first half ended 10-7. Despite closing the gap to three, the Chiefs offense looked a bit out of synch after watching them put up 44 in Week 1.

Herbert and the Chargers marched down the field to open the second half with an 11 play touchdown drive that Mike Williams finished off when made a one handed snag in the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown to put Los Angeles back up 17-7. Williams would end the night with eight catches and 113 yards in a day in which he became Herbert’s main target.

Much like in the first half, Kansas City responded to the Chargers touchdown with a touchdown drive of their own. It was almost ended after two plays when Asante Samuel jumped on a route and Mahomes threw it right into the hands of the safety bobbled the first attempt, dove to the ground and appeared to have made the interception. Referees went to review and ruled that the ground helped the defender make the catch and overturned the interception call.

With a second chance, Mahomes made no mistake getting his team to midfield a few plays later and then dropping a perfectly place one footed throw into the path of Justin Watson for a 41 yard TD to make it 17-14.

Seventh round draft makes play of the night

After a series of three and outs, two from Los Angeles and one from Kansas City, the Chiefs tied up the game at 17-17 after being stopped on the goal line and electing to level the game with a field goal instead of going for the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Los Angeles looked on the verge of responded with a touchdown of their own on the ensuing drive as Herbert led the Chargers all the way to the KC three yard line, but his pass to Gerald Everett was intercepted by the Chiefs seventh round draft pick Jaylen Watson who returned it 99 yards for the pick six.

The LA offense went stagnent again in the next two possessions which allowed the Chiefs to kick another field goal after Clyde Edward-Helaire broke off a 52 yard run with an additional 15 yards after a face mask call on the Chargers put KC at the LA 18. Matt Amendola, who was filling in for the injured Harrison Butker, hit the 31 yard field goal to push the lead to two possessions with 3:24 to go.

Herbert's pick overshadows three TD night

The Chargers need a quick score and they got one just two minutes later on a drive in which Herbert was rocked in the backfield twice. He had to come off after suffering an apparent injury to his ribs, but that didn’t stop him from returning and throwing a 35 yard bullet to Deandre Carter to make it 27-24 with 1:11 to go in the game.

Dustin Hopkin’s onside kick popped loose for a moment, but was recovered by the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes could just kneel out the clock to secure the second win of the season.

Mahomes finished the game with 235 yards and two touchdowns on 24/35 passing. Herbert had 334 yards and three touchdowns, but had the one critical mistake that ended up costing the Chargers the game.

Herbert will now have a few extra days to rest his injured ribs before their home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars next week. The Chiefs will continue their treacherous start to the season with a game against the Colts in Indianapolis next week.

Tonight's odds

According to Bet365.com the Chiefs are a 4 point favorite at home and the Over/Under is 52.5. I think the Chiefs cover the spread at home and I don't see as many points being scored as pepole think.

Tyreek Who?

The absence of Tyreek Hill was barley noticed, if at all, in the Chiefs first game the regular season. The speedy receiver was Kansas City’s down field threat for the last few years, but was shipped to South Beach in the offseason leaving many questions concerning the offense of KC this season. Those questions were quelled instantly when the Chiefs totaled 488 yards of total offense.

AFC WEST

We all know that the AFC West on paper looks like the toughest division in football. The Chiefs have been the pace setters in the AFC for the last four years. The Raiders made the playoffs last year, and knocking out the Chargers on the last play of the season. And with the Broncos addition of Russell Wilson under center, Denver are now contenders in the conference.

The Chargers could make an early statement tonight by getting to the top of the division after just two weeks, but the Chiefs will have other ideas.

Mahomes vs. Herbert

Patricks Mahomes was one of the preseason favorites to win the NFL MVP for a second time in his career. He got off on the right foot last week, throwing for five touchdowns for the sixth time in his career. Justin Herbert hit 76% of his passes against the Chargers while throwing three touchdowns and totaling 279 yards. Herbert’s progression through since his rookie year has been astronomical, and in his third year in the league don’t be surprised if he is in the MVP conversation at the end of the year.

Mahomes is in the building

The Chiefs make their home debut at Arrowhead tonight after laying the smackdown on the Cardinals in Arizona last week. They will need another big performance from their superstar captain on the offensive end Patrick Mahomes, who looks a lot like that guy from the State Farm commercials.

Chargers roll up to KC focused

The Chargers know Arrowhead Stadium well, and have beaten the Chiefs on these grounds the last two times they have visited Kansas City, including last year’s 30-24 win in late September.

Chargers last week

This will be the Chargers second straight divisional game after beating the Las Vegas Raiders in the season opener. Justin Herbert and the offense moved the ball with ease in the second half, and the revamped defense looked better than ever with the addition of Khalil Mack and a beefed up secondary that picked off Derek Carr three times. Mack sacked Carr three times, including the game winner on 4th down to secure the win for the Chargers.

Chiefs in Week 1

Any questions about the Chiefs potential struggles on the offensive end after trading away Kareem Hunt were answered immediately as Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the unit ran rampant on the Arizona Cardinals. The KC QB threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns in the 44-21 beatdown. Juju Smith-Schuster was brought in to fill the void left by the Hill trade, and he had a solid debut with 79 yards on six catches, but the offense will always run through Travis Kelce who caught eight balls for 121 and a touchdown.
