Los Angeles Chargers 16 vs 22 San Francisco 49ers summary: stats and highlights | NFL 10

The San Francisco 49ers moved above .500 with a crucial win over a banged up Los Angeles Chargers team on Sunday Night. The defense pitched a shutout in the second half to lead the Niners to the 22-16 primetime victory.

San Francisco came in fresh

The Niners came into Sunday night’s match up rested and refreshed after a bye last week. The Chargers did not. Los Angeles came into Week 10 with a battered roster missing their two top receivers, and a handful of other players on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

For the first time since the Christian McCaffery trade we saw a healthy San Fran team with Deebo Samuel and McCaffery fully featured in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, but late in the game it was Elijah Mitchell to took the wheel and drove the Niners to victory.

The Chargers got off to a promising start despite their lack of weapons on the offensive end. Justin Herbert led LA to an opening drive touchdown with a 33 yard TD pass to Deandre Carter for what turned out to be the only touchdown of the Chargers night.

Chargers couldn't capitalize on mistakes

San Francisco got all the way down to the two yard line on their first possession, but had to settle for a field goal, and after that the offense went silent until just before halftime.

One Niner possession ended when Brandon Aiyuk fumbled in SF territory, but the Chargers could only get three points after the field goal. On the next San Francisco drive the Chargers got a piece of the punt and again had fantastic field position, but again settled for a Cameron Dicker field goal.

Kyle Shanahan’s team finally punched the ball in the end zone with just under two minutes in the half when Jimmy Garoppolo had a QB sneak to close the gap to 13-7, but the Chargers added to that lead with a field goal as the half expired.

Defense takes command in second half

Those would be the last points the Chargers scored. The Niners forced three straight punts to start the the second half while San Fran kicked a field goal to open the third quarter and then scored a touchdown to take their first lead of the game.

It was the running game took control in the second half and it was on the shoulders of Elijah Mitchell. Mitchell had 89 yards on 18 carries, and was a big part of the of the two scoring drives to give the home side the lead. The TD drive was set up by a 24 yard completion on 3rd and 10 to get the Niners down to the two yard line. From there, McCaffery punched it in and San Francisco didn’t look back.

It was another virtuoso performance from Jimmy Garoppolo as a game manager. He held on to the ball, he didn't have to air it out, and most importantly he led the Niners on scoring drive deep in the game.

He had a rock solid 240 yards on 19/28 passing while Justin Herbert threw for 196 yards, only 35 of those yards came in the second half.

Division matchups coming for SF and LA

They would add a third Robbie Gould field goal to extend the lead to 6 points with under a minute to go and the defense ended the game in fashion as they so often do. Talanoa Hufanga made the game winning pick after Herbert’s arm was hit on the pass attempt.

The Niners didn’t win pretty, but they are above .500 with the same record as the Chargers. Los Angeles will take on Kansas City next Sunday night at Sofi while the Niners host Arizona.

McCaffery now has four TDs in three games for the Niners and this one gave San Fran the lead which they would hold on to for the rest of the night.

The Niners started to pound it with the running game, and it was Mitchell, not McCaffery, not Samuel leading the way. He ended the night with 89 yards on 18 rushes.

The Niners started the night with a long drive, but had to settle for a field goal to open the night. Right after the Two Minute Warning, Jimmy G pushed it into the endzone on the QB sneak.

The Chargeres came up with this fumble and a blocked punt and got inside the 10 yard line on the ensuing possessions but settled for two field goals, leaving valuable points on the board.

The Chargers came into Sunday night decimated at the WR position, but that didn't stop Herbert and LA from coming out and scoring on their first drive on the game.

SAN FRANCISCO WIN!!!

The Niners had to battle back in the second half, and let the defense and the run game lead them to vicotry.

They improve to 5-4 on the year in a hard fought vicotry in primetime.

INTERCEPTION!!!

Herbert's arm was deflected on the throw and Hufanga comes up with the game winning pick!!

That will do it! The defense closes the door on the Chargers after shutting out LA in the second half.

Carter returns the kick to the LA 23 and here comes Herbert and the Chargers with no timeouts and 53 seconds on the clock.

FIELD GOAL NINERS!!!

Gould knocks home his third field goal of the game, and make the Chargers have to score a touchdown with 58 seconds to go in the game.

San Fran leads 22-16 with under a minute to go.

Mitchell stumbled in the backfield and he lost a yard to bring up 4th and Goal.

Now what do the Niners do?

Mitchell stopped after a short gain of 1 yard and the Niners have 3rd and Goal from the 1.

Herbert had Palmer over the middle, but was under pressure and that affected the throw which was off the mark.

San Fran take over from their 30 yard lilne and have 6:40 left in the fourth quarter to protect their three point lead.

The Niners get the ball from the 25 yard line and Jimmy G hits McCaffery on the wheel route for a gain of 21 yards.

The Chargers came up with a couple big plays on defense and special teams, but only got field goals on each of the ensuing drives.

The Niners struggled to move the ball at times, but their drive late in the first half sets them up with a chance in the second half.

Jimmy G is 9/13 with 128 yards and a rushing TD, while Mitchell leads the Niners with 23 yards on the ground.

We are at halftime and the Chargers lead 16-10 thanks to an opening drive TD and three Dicker field goals.

Herbert is 14/21 for 161 yards and a TD, and leads the Chargers in rushing with 20 yards.

Carter has 70 of those 161 yards for a TD after 30 minutes.

Dicker comes on for the third time tonight and drills the 40 yard field goal! The big story coming out of that drive was the health of Herbert. Does he come back in the second half?

The Chargers will start the game from their 25 yard line. The offense is banged up by Herbert hasn't let that deter him this season.

According to Bet365.com the Niners are 8 point favorites against the banged up Chargers, with the Over/Under set at 45.5.

I'm take the Chargers tonight. I think a lot of people are a little caught up on the Niners and we forget that the Chargers are a five win team. I'm going with LA plus the points tonight.

Deebo's back on the block

Deebo Samuel hasn’t played since the Chiefs game in Week 7, and returns to action tonight fully fit and ready to be the difference maker he has yet to be this year after signing a monster contract in the offseason. Through seven weeks, the Niners most dynamic player had just 387 yards and two TDs receiving and 138 yards with a touchdown on the ground.

The Chargers have struggled to stay healthy all year. They have been Justin Herbert has kept LA on track with some fantastic play at quarterback. He has 2,254 yards, 13 TDs and 5 INTs in the first eight games of the season, and that’s with a rib cage that has been banged up since Week 2 against the Chiefs.

The Jimmy G legacy continues

Whenever Jimmy G is under center for the Niners, they have a different look about them. They don’t put up a ton of points, and their stats aren’t jaw dropping but the Niners know how to win the number 10 as their gun slinger. He has thrown for 1,691 yards and 11 TD with 4 INTs in seven games this season. With McCaffery and Samuel on the field at the same time, this offensive just might turn into one of the most dangerous in the league.

Christian already feeling right at home

It’s a trade that makes you think the Niners are all in this year in their quest for a Super Bowl. The Niners brought in one of the most dynamic dual threat running backs in Christian McCaffery and he wasted no time incorporating into the San Fran offense. He had three touchdowns last week and is will be reuniting with another one of the most explosive players in the NFL.

LA make the short trip north

Austin Ekeler led the league with 19 TDs last year, and he already has 10 TDs this year. He comes into tonight knowing that he will be going up against one of the top rushing defenses in the NFL. If he can go for triple digits on the ground, the Chargers will have a great chance to win in hostile territory tonight.

The last time the Niners were in Levi Stadium, they were walking off the field after getting demolished by the Kansas City Chiefs. Now it’s time for Jimmy G and the gang return home, where they are 2-1 on the season looking for another big win which will bring them in striking distance of the Seattle Seahawks who lost in Munich earlier today.

LA last week

The Chargers got a tough win after a long road trip to the East Coast and came out of Atlanta with a win after one of the strangest plays you’ll ever see. LA went down 10 early in the game and battled back in the second half courtesy of two Austin Ekeler touchdowns set up a dramatic finish. The Chargers were marching down the field with the game tied at 17-17 when Ekeler fumbled the ball deep in ATL territory and the ball scooped by Taquon Graham who gave it right back to LA. After the stroke of good fortune, Cameron Dicker hit the 37 yard field goal as the time ran out. 

San Fran coming off a bye

The Niners used last week to get rested and recovered after an eventful first eight weeks of the season. They saw their future face of the franchise suffer a season ending ankle injury in Week 2, and Jimmy Garoppolo came in under center after an offseason of uncertainty about his future. The offense hasn’t looked great under Garoppolo, but Chirstian McCaffery showed exactly what he is capable of in the last game against the Rams when he threw, ran and passed for a TD.

They have had a bumpy start to the season, but a huge mid season trade for Christian McCaffery has the Niners in the conversation for NFC favorites despite just four wins in eight games. The Chargers have battled injuries all year long, but come into tonight at 5-3 and well in the hunt for not just a playoff spot, but a one seed in the AFC.
