Mahomes and Kelce shake off Brady and Gronkowski record
The partnership between Kansas City’s quarterback and tight end has gone into the NFL record books as another Super Bowl tilt comes into view.
The Kansas City Chiefs aim to build a dynasty akin to the one the New England Patriots enjoyed, and they have quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who could emulate what Tom Brady achieved for over 20 years. On Sunday, in the Divisional Round matchup against the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs’ star broke the record for most touchdowns with a single receiver by linking up twice with Travis Kelce, bringing his total trips to the end zone to 16.
The previous record was held by Brady and Rob Gronkowski, who amassed 15 touchdown connections during their shared stints with the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The third spot belongs to Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, who notched 12 touchdown connections while dominating the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s.
Mahomes’ latest touchdowns with Kelce
The first touchdown came in the second quarter through a 22-yard spiral from the shotgun formation. Mahomes capitalised on the Bills’ zone coverage and connected with Kelce with no defenders near the tight end.
The second touchdown occurred early in the third quarter, capping off a six-play, 75-yard series. Kelce took advantage of the offensive line’s blocks in a screen pass and reached the end zone after making a last-ditch effort dive.
