Mecole Hardman has re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on a one-year contract. The 26-year-old wide receiver, who fans will remember caught the game-winning touchdown in overtime against the 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII, had entered free agency on conclusion of last season.

Hardman started out at the University of Georgia, joining the Chiefs as a second-round draft pick in April 2019. He signed a four-year deal worth $4.9 million but was eventually traded to the New York Jets in March 2023, joining as a free agent. He played just five games in New York, catching just one pass for 6 yards. He requested to be traded and was taken back by his former team in October of that year.

Hardman not happy in New York

After rejoining the Chiefs, Hardman’s figures improved - he caught 14 passes for 118 yards, taking his overall career numbers to 165 receptions and 16 touchdowns. It will be interesting to see where where the 26-year-old wide receiver fits in with the Chiefs, who recently signed Marquise Brown and drafted Xavier Worthy. Hardman could also fill in for Rashee Rice, who is expected to be hit with a suspension after being charged with eight felonies, including aggravated assault.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling meanwhile was released to free up salary cap space.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid was full of praise for Hardman following his heroics in February’s Super Bowl, telling reporters at the time: Super Bowl LVIII: “He works hard at it and he’ll run like a son of a gun. He’s fast. We were able to hit him on the deep one, we weren’t able to capitalize on it with the fumble. We came back at the end and got another Corndog to work for us”.
