Update:

During a 13-season career in the NFL, Michael Vick was one of the most well-known names in the sport.

The Virginia Tech graduate played most of his professional career with the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles, before later spells at the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, after years out of the game, Vicks is returning to his native state of Virginia to become head coach of the Norfolk State Spartans.

“Today marks a historic day for Norfolk State University,” said Dr. Melody Webb, athletic director at Norfolk State, when the hire was announced back in December. “I am thrilled to welcome Michael Vick and his family back to the Hampton Roads area to lead our football program.”

One of the greatest athletes the region has ever seen, Coach Vick’s leadership, knowledge, and dedication will pour into the fundamental layers of the foundation we hope to build for Norfolk State football.”

After retiring from the NFL in 2017 Vick made the unusual decision to join the newly-formed American Flag Football League, where he captained ‘Team Vick’. He then moved to the ‘Roadrunners’ for a year before officially hanging up his cleats.

In 2018 he spent a year with the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football, initially as an offensive coordinator before switching to become a consultant. That brief stint was his last real involvement in the game an he has admitted

“It wasn’t the easiest decision to make,” Vick said of his decision to return to coaching. “I’ve got family that I considered, I care about and I love. This requires a lot of change in lifestyle. But at the same time, it allows me to serve young men in my community.”

He joins a program in desperate need of inspiration. The Spartans have made the FCS playoffs only once in team history and haven’t recorded more than five wins in a season since 2011.
