Patriots 27 vs 13 Cardinals summary: stats, and highlights | NFL Week 14
The New England Patriots are in Wild Card position after their win over Arizona thanks to some brilliant defense play in the second half from Bill Belichick’s side. Raekwon McMillan's fumble recovery for a touchdown turned the tides in the third quarter and the Pats went on to win 27-13 at State Farm Stadium.
Pats pushing for postseason
It was a game with massive playoff implications as the Cardinals held on to the slightest ray of hope coming into the game, while the Pats knew they could jump into playoff position with a win on Monday night.
The Cardinals were coming off a bye, looking to keep their slim postseason dreams alive in a place they have won just once since October of 2021. The prospects of a home win got even more complicated when Kyler Murray went down on just the third play of the game. The Cardinals QB1 went down without being touched, and it was reported to be a potentially serious knee injury, although he will have further tests tomorrow.
The Patriots had to deal with injury problems of their own as they watched DeVante Parker and Rhamondre Stevenson go to the sideline and not return. After Matt Prater hit two of his first three field goals to start the game, the Patriots responded with a touchdown drive to start the second quarter. With Stevenson hurt, Kevin Harris’ workload got heavier and he took a 14 yard run to the house to give the Pats a 7-6 lead.
Defense takes over in second half
The Cardinals didn’t have trouble moving the ball with their back up Colt McCoy under center, but they did struggle to punch the ball into the end zone. They went just 1-3 in the red zone, and to add to their two giveaways, they turned it over on downs three other times. Their lone TD came late in the second quarter when James Connor ran in a 10 yard TD to give the Cardinals the 13-7 lead.
Pats kicker Nick Folk hit field goals on both sides of the halftime break to level the score, but the play of the game came on the defensive end early in the third quarter. The Cardinals were deep in their territory when McCoy hit DeAndre Hopkins on a crossing route, but the Arizona receiver fumbled and Raekwon McMillan scooped up the fumble and took it to the house to give the Pats the 20-13 lead.
On the next possession the Pats defense would come up with another game changing play when Marcus Jones picked off McCoy as the Cardinals were looking to tie up the game.
New England jump into Wild Card spot
Jones would hit Hunter a few plays later on a deep strike down the seam, and that set up Pierre Strong’s three yard TD to put the game out of reach for a Cardinals team that struggled on the offensive end all night.
The Pats QB went 24/35 for 235 yards and overcame an early interception thrown in the first quarter. Pierre Stong and Kevin Harris shared the brunt of the carries with Stevenson sidelined and they combined for 96 yards in the win that now has the Patriots as the seven seed in the AFC Playoff Picture.
Just a minute into the fourth quarter, Stong buried Arizona with this three yard TD run. The Pats sat back and let their defense take care of business the rest of the way.
Jones found Henry down the seam for a big play which set up the TD to close the door on the Cards.
The Cards were driving, looking to tie up the game but Marcus Jones came up with the the pick to turn the Cardinals over for the second straight drive.
New England kicked field goals at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half to tie the game at 13, but the biggest play of the game game of the defensive end. Hopkins coughed up the ball and McMillan scooped it and scored.
After the Cardinals connected on two of three field goals to start the game, James Conner took a few defenders into the end zone with him on this 10 yard TD run to take the lead.
Stevenson went down early in the game, and Harris took over in the backfield for NE. He scored the opening TD of the game to put the Pats up on the Cardinals early in the second half.

I'm taking the under in this game, I don't thing either of these offenses are very good and on a game that has so much weight in terms of playoff position, I think both teams come out a little conservative.
Both teams' playoff chances

Both teams have seen their playoff chances dwindling the past few weeks, with the Patriots trying to avoid their third consecutive loss, and the Cardinals being defeated in four of its past five games.

The Bills are at the top of the division, and the Dolphins have one of the three Wild Card spots at the moment. The Chargers and Bengals are in the other two Wild Card spots, while the Pats can draw level with the Chargers at 7-6. The Jets are also at 7-6 sitting outside the playoff picture after their loss to the Bills yesterday.

NFC Standings
At the moment the Cardinals sit well behind the Niners in the NFC West, and their chances of winning the division have almost disappeared. They should be focusing all their attention on that final Wild Card spot, but they currently sit 2.5 games back of the Giants who hold the final playoffs position in the NFC. The Cowboys and the Commanders have the other two Wild Card spots in as the five and six seed respectively.

Pats are in the house
The Pats know this stadium well. Back in 2015 they beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in Super Bowl XLIX. Tonight they come back looking to strengthen their case for a Wild Card positioning. Rhamondre Stevenson needs to be much more productive tonight then he was against the Patriots last Thursday. If those pants are any indication, I'd say he's ready for the big show.
Cards looking for a home victory
The Cardinals have been terrible at State Farm Stadium for over a year, and return home after their bye needing a win now more than ever. Arizona has won just once since October of 2021 under their home roof. The win came against the Saints in early October, but since then have lost to Seattle and the Chargers since their last whole win. Tonight Kyler Murray Is going to need to show up to keep the Cards playoff chances alive.
Cardinals last game
Arizona are coming off of their bye week and it was a week off that was filled with the bitter taste of a last minute loss to the Chargers. The Cardinals went blow for blow with Los Angeles and took a touchdown lead with a James Conner 6 yards catch early in the fourth quarter. Kliff Kingsbury’s team almost held on to that lead until the end, but Austin Ekeler caught a TD pass with 15 seconds left and then Justin Herbert found Gerald Everett on the game winning two points conversion to drop the Cardinals into the abyss.
Pats last week
The New England Patriots were mopped up by the Buffalo Bills last week when the offense got blanked in Orchard Park. Mac Jones led the offense on a touchdown drive on their Pats second drive of the game, but then were shut down until the last two minutes of the game. Josh Allen passed for two touchdowns and Devin Singletary rushed for another in the 24-10 win on Thursday night.
