The New Orleans Saints went into LA and defeated the Chargers at SoFi Stadium in a game that was dominated by special teams. The Saints kicked five field goals and used their defense to hold off the Chargers late comeback bid.
Winston gets the start
The Derek Carr era is underway in New Orleans, but after playing a few series in Week 1 of the preseason, he got the night off and Jameis Winston started under center for the Saints.
Both teams exchanged punts in the first quarter as neither team could move the ball on the offensive end, but a strip sack to start the second quarter set up a three play scoring drive led by Kenadre Miller who had a 27 yard catch on a dime from Winston and a 7 yard TD run for the game’s first score.
The Chargers went three and out on their first three possessions and didn’t find their rhythm until after the Two Minute Warning in the second quarter. Eason Stick connected on a big pass play to Stone Smartt, and then scrambled for 21 yards down the right sideline before capping off the drive with a 7 yard QB keeper to tie the game up.
Saints go 5/5 from FG
New Orleans snuck a quick field goal on the board before the half, and then got inside the 5 yard line on the opening drive of the second half, but they would again have to settle for a field goal, taking a 16-10 lead.
Jake Haener took over from Winston after Jameis went 13/21 for 169 yards in the second half, and while Haener’s numbers were alright he had trouble getting the Saints into the end zone. He went 11/17 for 118 yards but New Orleans settled for three second half field goals which would end up being enough to hold off the Bolts. Will Lutz took the field goals in after halftime and he went three for three while Blake Grupe was 2/2 in the first half.
Stick stayed on the field all night, and seemed to be at his best when the Chargers were in their hurry up offense. He drove LA down the field at the end of the first half and gave the home side hope with another late drive at the end of the second half. He ran his second TD of the game in to the end zone with less than four minutes to go, and after a defensive stand the Chargers got the ball back down 22-17 with one last chance.
A prayer was answered on 4th and 23 to move LA down the field and give them a chance with under a minute left but Stick was picked off and the Saints held on for victory. Stick went 21/41 for 233 yard, and two rushing touchdowns but also threw two interceptions.
The Chargers got the ball back after closing it to a one score game, and this 4th and forever conversion kept LA's chances alive until Stick got picked by Lonnie Johnson Jr.
Stick gave the Chargers a little bit of hope with under 4:00 to go, but LA waited to long to get going in the second half.
Stick threw the ball 41 times on Sunday night, but he was at his best using his legs in the hurry up offense.
The Saints defense didn't make it easy for Eason Stick. He threw two picks and had trouble moving the offense for much of the night.

Herbert’s year?
It is more than probable that we won’t be seeing Justin Herbert at all this preseason. The face of the franchise spent much of last year playing through pain after suffering a fracture of rib cartilage in a game against he Chiefs early in the season. Herbert is one of the best young QBs in the league, and while he threw for almost 5,000 yards last year, there is even more expected of him and the Chargers who are in one of the toughest divisions in all of football.
Jimmy Graham update
The news coming into tonight isn’t focused around football, instead it’s centered on Saints TE Jimmy Graham who was taken into custody by LA police officers on Friday night. Officers arrived on the scene after reports of a man acting erratically, and took Graham into custody believing he was under the influence of a controlled substance. "New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham experienced a medical episode last evening, which resulted in him becoming disoriented," the team said. "He was taken into custody by local authorities and transported to a local hospital for evaluation for what Dr. John Amoss believes to be a likely seizure and spent the night under medical supervision and testing." Graham returned to New Orleans this offseason after seven years away from the team.
Saints back to being relevant?
For the first time since Drew Brees retired, there is a bit of hope surrounding this New Orleans Saints team. They have had a bumpy ride at the QB position for the last few years and now Derek Carr comes to town looking to bring some stability to the offense. The NFC South was the worst in football last year, and if the Saints can stay around .500 or better they should have a chance to get to the playoffs this year.
What lies ahead
Will this finally be the year that the LA Chargers make a break through and become serious contenders in the AFC? To do that they will have to get through the brutal AFC West that looks like it may be even stronger than the year before. KC are defending champs, Denver are under new direction with Sean Payton and the Raiders have Jimmy G under center and a multitude of weapons on the offensive and defensive end.
Saints last game
Derek Carr got the start in his first game in New Orleans and reminded people of the kind of quarterback that he is capable of being. He went 6/8 for 70 yards and orchestrated the games first TD drive. Jameis Winston was solid after taking over QB duties, going 11/13 for 92 yards and a TD. While the QB play was good, it took a last second FG from Blake Grupe from 31 yard out to top the Chiefs from the Ceasars Superdome.
Chargers last game
There may have been no Justin Herbert or Austin Ekeler, but that didn’t stop the Chargers from lighting up the scoreboard against their intercity rivals. With no Herbert under center Max Duggan got the start, but it was Easton Stick who got the majority of the snaps. He went 14/21, passing for 109 yards, but it was the run game that provided the fireworks in SoFi last week. The Chargers ran the ball 31 times for 214 yards and two TDs as Derius Davis ran a punt return back to cap off a complete performance to begin the preseason slate.

Hello everyone and welcome to SoFi Stadium where the Chargers are back in LA after dropping the Rams in the first preseason game last week. None of the starters played last week and are unlikely to play tonight after a long week of joint practices with the Saints. The Derek Carr era officially began in the Big Easy with a win over the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Tonight these two teams are under the lights in the only game of the day in the penultimate exhibition before cuts are made and the final 53 man rosters are named.
