‘The Match’ has returned in 2022 and this time it’s all about the NFL, as we have a battle between some of the league’s best quarterbacks.

‘The Match’ goes all in with NFL players for 2022

With past editions of Capital One’s ‘The Match’ normally featuring established professional golfers either playing on their own or paired with a professional athlete from another sport, this is the first time there won’t be any golfers present as the line up consists of only players from the NFL. Indeed, the 2022 edition of this increasingly popular sporting event will feature the likes of NFL legend Tom Brady and Packers star Aaron Rodgers teaming up against the two young guns of the league in Bills’ Josh Allen and Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes.

Interestingly, it will be Brady’s third appearance having twice played alongside PGA great Phil Mickelson. Where his teammate Rodgers is concerned, it will actually be the Green Bay QB’s second showing at the event. Incidentally, Rodgers actually beat Brady and Mickelson in 2021 when he played alongside American golfer Bryson DeChambeau. Rest assured what is essentially an NFC vs AFC battle taking place on the course will surely draw huge amounts of attention as we get to witness to NFL greats take on two of the best rising stars in the league. A 12 hole game, ‘The Match’ is set to tee off on Wednesday, June 1st at 6:30 p.m. ET. and will take place at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. As for the purse involved, while official numbers aren’t known, ‘The Match’ is a charity game and to date has raised close to $33 million for a number of charities including Feeding America.

A look at the line up for ‘The Match’ of 2022

Tom Brady

While he’s an avid golfer who is known to frequent the greens, Brady’s handicap places him as the second worst in the line up. With that said the man they call ‘GOAT’ has improved since his pairing with Mickleson last year when he lost to his teammate for this year’s game, Aaron Rodgers. As if to prove the point, Brady was all to happy to share his recent hole in one with fans. Take a look for yourself.

Aaron Rodgers

Where numbers are concerned, Rodgers is actually the best golfer of the quartet. According to the Wisconsin State Golf Association, Rodgers plays with a 4.6 handicap, the lowest in the field. Needless to say the two time NFL MVP - two years consecutively - has already been giving the slack to Allen and Mahomes ahead of their showdown. “Charles, I’ve done my scouting report and I heard that Josh was terrible in Pebble (Beach) and Pat has played the last couple of years in Tahoe and hasn’t broken 80 yet,” Rodgers recently told former NBA star Charles Barkley. “I think he was closer to being in a group with you - no offense, Charles - than maybe with me in Tahoe. I feel really good about our chances.” As an example of his prowess, it was actually Rodgers birdie putt that sealed the win for him and DeChambeau back in 2020 when they faced off Brady and Mickelson.

Josh Allen

Handicap wise, Allen is the least adept among the lineup. Earlier this year at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Allen had a handicap of 9.0, which is to say he’s approximately a stroke worse than Brady and nearly 4.5 strokes worse than Rodgers. Speaking recently, the Bills’ star admitted that he wasn’t happy with his performance, but it had been sometime since he had played prior to the tournament. “It wasn’t very good. I had a great time, I will say that. Met some really great people,” Allen said. “I’m so competitive that I was just so frustrated the whole week and not playing well. But to look out and see the beach and see the water, and it being 70 degrees at 10 o’clock in the morning with the sun shining down on my face, it was hard to be mad.”

Patrick Mahomes

Stuck in the middle, that’s where Patrick Mahomes finds himself. According to golf.com, Mahomes’ handicap stands at 7.7, meaning he’s a little above Brady, but just below Rodgers. With that said Mahomes has wasted no time in stating his confidence about the chances he and his teammate Allen have against Brady and Rodgers. Mahomes didn’t hold back as he joked about the difference in age and how it would be a difference maker. “The reason we’re going to win is that we’re going to be able to play the course differently than old Tom and old Aaron over there,” Mahomes said. “They might get us on a couple of par 3s and stuff like that but whenever we can really open it up and use the drivers...it’s going to be nice to be able to use our little wedges like they use their 6-irons.” If nothing else, the ‘kid’ can hit them.
