Kansas City will have to readjust their wide receiver strategy, after trading their top receiver, Tyreek Hill, to the Miami Dolphins, in addition to the other two receivers, Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson.

The Chiefs traded Hill in late March because they couldn’t afford to keep him, especially since a big portion of their salary cap is dedicated to Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year, $450 million contract.

And since Hill will also be getting the big bucks from the Miami Dolphins, with a four-year, $120 million extension, Mahomes is ‘happy for him.’

Patrick Mahomes on Tyreek Hill trade: “I wish the best for him”

On Monday, Mahomes told reporters that his initial reaction to the news was “a little bit of shock.” He added that even though he knew it was a possibility to see him go, he was still impacted by his loss. “A guy you had played with and built a friendship with over the last six years, it was definitely something you didn’t want him to leave more for being able to hang out in the locker room and do that stuff more than the actual on-the-field stuff.

But you’re happy for him. Obviously, he got a great contract. He’s back where he has a house in the offseason around a lot of his family and stuff like that. I wish the best for him.”

Mahomes and Hill had a great relationship both on and off the field during their four years together as starters. Hill was Mahomes’ No. 1 receiver, averaging 97 catches, 1,375 yards and 12 touchdowns per 17 games played during that time.

Every year, the 28-year-old receiver made the Pro Bowl, and was named first-team All-Pro two times.

Mahomes confident in Kansas City Chiefs’ receiver productivity

While the Chiefs have signed JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency, not having Hill, Pringle and Robinson still raises a question of wide receiver productivity this season.

Mahomes, however, seems to be sure his team will find a way to be as productive as they usually are.

We’ll have to find production in different ways than we did last year because Tyreek was such a big part of our offense,’’ Mahomes said. “I think you’ve seen in games when we haven’t had Tyreek or we haven’t had certain people other guys have stepped up and made plays happen, and I expect that to happen this year, as well.’’
