Patrick Mahomes slumps to new low as Chiefs lose again to Eagles
Philadelphia edged Kansas City 20-17 at Arrowhead, leaving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs at 0-2 for the first time.
The Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) once again got the better of the Kansas City Chiefs (0-2), months after defeating them in Super Bowl LIX. This time, the NFC East contenders walked into Arrowhead Stadium and left with a hard-fought 20-17 victory, powered by their ground attack and timely takeaways.
Patrick Mahomes’ unwanted new record
For the first time since Patrick Mahomes became Kansas City’s starting quarterback, the Chiefs have opened a season 0-2. Andy Reid’s squad sits at the bottom of the AFC West, while the Chargers lead the division. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is in control of the NFC East after the Cowboys beat the Giants and the Commanders fell to the Packers.
Slow start in Kansas City
The much-anticipated Super Bowl rematch was anything but early on. The first three drives ended in punts, and Harrison Butker missed a 58-yard field goal on the fourth. The Eagles capitalized immediately, with Saquon Barkley punching in a 13-yard touchdown run to give Philadelphia the lead.
The action picked up in the second quarter. Butker redeemed himself with a 56-yard kick, then Mahomes scrambled into the end zone for a score. But before halftime, Jake Elliott drilled a 58-yarder to send the teams into the break tied at 10.
Turnovers doom the Chiefs
The second half began poorly for Kansas City. Facing fourth-and-1, Kareem Hunt was stuffed behind the line and lost the ball in the process. Philadelphia didn’t do much with the takeaway, but Elliott’s 51-yard field goal still put them ahead.
Down three, the Chiefs drove to the Eagles’ 6-yard line. But under pressure from Jalen Carter, Mahomes’ pass intended for Travis Kelce was intercepted by Andrew Mukuba, who returned it 41 yards before being dragged down by Joshua Simmons. The Eagles quickly cashed in with their signature “tush push,” as Jalen Hurts scored on a 1-yard keeper to make it 20-10 with under eight minutes left.
Mahomes sparks hope, but Eagles hold on
Mahomes gave Kansas City one last spark, hitting Tyquan Thornton on a 49-yard bomb for his first passing touchdown of the day. That cut the deficit to three.
But the comeback stopped there. The Chiefs’ onside kick was recovered by Philadelphia, and the Eagles calmly ran the ball to drain the final three minutes. Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill had a late chance to strip Hurts, but the quarterback held on, sealing Kansas City’s 0-2 start.
