Update:

When a centenarian patriot celebrated a landmark birthday last month, he got more than just cake and candles. Louis Tanzer, believed to be the oldest living World War II veteran in Massachusetts, received a heartfelt salute from the New England Patriots organisation that left him beaming.

Tanzer, who recently turned 105, has long been celebrated in his home town of Beverly for his wartime service and enduring spirit. After enlisting in his early 20s despite eligibility for deferment, he served with the United States Marine Corps’ 4th Marine Aircraft Wing in the central Pacific, including time in the Ellice and Marshall Islands.

He also spent part of the war aboard the USS Altamaha, a Liberty ship that played a vital support role in the Pacific Theatre.

A grassroots effort by local volunteers began the birthday festivities. Members of the Veterans Council in Beverly gathered cards from across the community in December to mark Tanzer’s milestone year. Among those thoughtful greetings was a particularly meaningful contribution from the Patriots. Head coach Mike Vrabel, Hall of Famer Andre Tippett, and the entire current roster signed a large card to honour Tanzer’s service and longevity.

It was a huge surprise,” Tanzer said of the card. “Totally unexpected and greatly appreciated. It meant a lot.”

Along with a card, Tanzer also received a video call from team owner Robert Kraft. During the conversation, Kraft thanked Tanzer for his service and acknowledged the sacrifices made by his generation. “I want you to know you’re my hero,” Kraft told Tanzer. “When I heard the story about you and what a courageous young man you were and how you served this great country of ours – and then, they told me you’re a Patriots fan!”

It’s an honour to know you and I’m proud of you. I hope we give you (one more) good birthday present this year.”

I couldn’t ever have imagined I’d be talking to Robert Kraft face to face on Zoom,” Tanzer said. “It was great to meet him and to learn that we share some common bonds.”
