Cornerback Malcolm Butler, the hero of Super Bowl XLIX, made his return to New England this season after a short stint with the Tennessee Titans. On Tuesday his Foxborough comeback was cut short when the Patriots place him on the injured reserve.

Butler’s bitter homecoming

Robert Kraft’s team announced that they placed Butler and fellow cornerback Joejuan Williams on injured reserve in a press release earlier today.

Butler missed the last two practices before being placed on the IR. During the Patriots preseason opner, the cornerback played 22 snaps on defense. The West Alabama product has appeared in 100 regular season games and accumulated 405 tackles, 82 pass deflections, 17 interceptions, five forced fumbles, three sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Williams, who suffered a shoulder injury, has started one of the 36 games he has played with the Patriots and has 44 tackles and eight pass deflections. In 2021, the Vanderbilt product allowed 10 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown on 18 passes thrown his way.

Let the battle of the corners begin

Without Butler or Williams, the Patriots will have to find depth at cornerback for the rest of the preseason. Currently, the team has Justin Bethel, Jalen Mills, Terrance Mitchell, Marcus Jones, Shaun Wade, Myles Bryant and Jonathan Jones to fill the CB position.
