Patriots to name Jacoby Brissett Week 1 starter over Drake Maye
The New England Patriots kickoff their season against the Cincinnati Bengals, and it’s looking like first year coach Jerod Mayo has decided who will be QB1.
One of the last teams to name a starting quarterback appear to have finally figured out who will be under center for Week 1. Rookie head coach Jerod Mayo has made the first big decision of his tenure in Foxborough and he’s going with a veteran QB next Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Changing of the guard in NE
It’s never an easy task trying to replace a legend in a place like New England. This new look Patriots team doesn’t just have to deal with replacing one legend, if not two, one on the sidelines and one under center.
For the first time in 23 years someone other than Bill Belichick will be on the sidelines at Gillette Stadium. Tom Brady has been gone for quite some time, but the organization is still looking for his incumbent as the franchise quarterback for the years to come. They might have that with No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye, but we won’t know that anytime soon, from what it appears.
According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Scheffer and Jeremy Fowler, Coach Mayo informed his team that he is going with veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett over rookie Drake Maye in Week 1. The Patriots were the last ones to name a starting quarterback, and the decision may not have as much to do with Maye as it does with the entire Patriots squad.
Pats don’t want hisotry to repeat
At the moment this isn’t a team ready to win football games. They were one of the worst teams in the league last year, and this year they aren’t expected to be much better. To throw a rookie into the fire from Week 1 can be dangerous for the present and future of the franchise.
The Pats should know that more than any team given the recent quarterback situation in Foxborough. They threw Mac Jones into the fire for his rookie season on a team that wasn’t ready to carry the first year QB, and three years later, the Pats sent him packing.
Brissett started all of the preseason games, but it was Maye who looked the better of the two quarterbacks. In fairness, Brissett didn’t get many snaps, but Maye did more with the snaps he was given in the tune up games over the last month. Brissett did take a shot in the final preseason game, and was holding his shoulder, but looks to be fine for kickoff to the season. When asked about Maye being the back up for Brissett, coach Mayo said Maye is “our second best quarterback on the roster.”
