New England picked Malcolm Butler, the man who intercepted Russell Wilson in 2015, to ring the bell and kick off a star-studded Super Bowl.

Santa Clara Update:

The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots were fierce rivals throughout the past decade, combining for seven Super Bowl appearances and four titles. After a brief downturn for both franchises, they meet again in this season’s final, a rematch of the 2015 classic. That night ended in heartbreak for Seattle, when Russell Wilson was intercepted on the goal line with 20 seconds left, a play that denied the Seahawks a winning touchdown. Eleven years on, Seattle are back at Levi’s Stadium seeking revenge.

Before kickoff, Santa Clara was a parade of celebrities. Bay Area natives Green Day opened the ceremony with four of their best-known songs, followed by introductions for past Super Bowl MVPs. Peyton and Eli Manning appeared, Joe Montana drew a huge ovation on home 49ers turf, and the loudest reaction came for Tom Brady, who had made headlines in recent days for initially withholding public support for the Patriots before ultimately backing them.

Around the field and in the luxury boxes were the likes of Roger Federer, Travis Kelce, Justin and Hailey Bieber, J Balvin, Sofía Vergara, Adam Sandler, Carmelo Anthony, Travis Scott, Jay-Z and Kane Brown. The team introductions were handled by Chris Pratt for Seattle and Jon Bon Jovi for New England. America the Beautiful was performed beneath a stadium-wide tifo in U.S. flag colours, before Charlie Puth delivered the national anthem, capped by a flyover that shook the building.

Then came the Patriots’ final jab. Just before kickoff, New England invited Butler, the cornerback who made the decisive interception against Wilson in 2015, to ring the ceremonial bell. Wilson watched from a suite. Before a snap was played, the Patriots had already landed the first blow.
