Patriots vs. Jets preview
Not a whole lot was expected from the Patriots after another disappointing season landed them with the third pick in last year’s draft while bringing the winningest coach in NFL history’s era to an end in Foxborough. This was a team that wasn’t expected to win many games this season, but after a shocking win in Cincinnati, the Patriots nearly improved to 2-0 last weekend. Joey Slay had a chance to put the Pats up six with under 4:00 to go in the fourth quarter, but he missed the 48 yarders allowing the Seahawks to push the game to over time and win it in the extra session.
On the contrary to the Patriots, there was a whole lot of expectation from the Jets coming into this season. Aaron Rodgers is finally under center following a season in which he was forced to sit on the sidelines. The Jets lost their opener to San Francisco, which may be disappointing but understandable given the the quality of opponent in Week 1. New York went on the road again last week, and came back from Tennessee with a win. It was far from an impressive performance against one of the worst teams in the league, but the defense locked down and the NFL’s youngest player, Braelon Allen, scored two TDs to bring the Jets to .500 early in the season.
These two division rivals have met a total of 130 times, and the Patriots have dominated the series, especially recently. New England has an overall record of 74-55-1 against the New York Jets in a rivalry that goes back to the 1960s. The Jets won most of the matchups through the first forty years, but ever since the turn of the century this has been a matchup owned by the New England. Since 2000, the Pats are 34-11 against the Jets. A lot of that success can be chalked up to Tom Brady and the New England dynasty, but even after he left Foxborough, the Pats continued to have the Jets number. They had won 15 straight games against the Jets before the Jets beat them 17-3 in Week 18 of last season.
Spread, Over/Under and Prediction
Coming into Thursday night’s match up from the Meadowlands, it the Jets who are almost a touchdown favorites in what is expected to be a game dominated by both teams’ defense.
Prediction:
Despite the one sided nature of this rivalry, division games are always difficult, especially when the game is on primetime. The Jets are back home knowing that they have had a couple of underwhelming games to start the season. I think they come out of the gate swinging for an early knock out blow against a Patriots team that would have trouble trying to claw back into a game.
New York win easy, 28-7.
