Who is Jerod Mayo, the new New England Patriots head coach? Career, family, salary...

Coach Mayo's turn

Jerod May is coming into a tough situation in New England. Bill Belichick was on the sidelines in Foxborough for the last couple of decades, leading them to six Super Bowl wins and turning the Pats into the winningest franchise in the league. Quick question, who followed in the footsteps of Vince Lombardi in Green Bay? Or Phil Jackson in Chicago? Or Joe Torre with the Yankees? The fact is, it’s hard to try and replace a legendary coach, especially being a coach with zero head coach experience. After played with the Pats for seven years, Mayo joined the staff in 2019 as the inside linebacker coach. He was promoted to head coach last year after Belichick and the Pats parted ways. If he has one thing on his side, it’s that he’s not coming into a winning team, so there is really no where to go but up.

as.com

Last year: Patriots

Bill Belichick’s last year in New England couldn’t have gone much worse. The six time Super Bowl winner had suffered some horrendous seasons in the post Tom Brady era, but last year was the summon. With Mac Jones as their quarterback, they won just two of their first 11 games of the season. Jones got benched, and to make matters worse Rhamondre Stevenson went down with a season ending injury. Bailey Zappe finished the season as quarterback winning two of the final six games, but the Pats finished the season with the third worst record in the league, which set up their third overall pick in the Draft.

Last year: Eagles

Philly went into last season as one of the favorites in the NFC after making it to the Super Bowl the previous year. Jalen Hurts got a couple of new weapons including AJ Brown, and the defense looked even better than the year before for the first 11 games of the season. Everything started to turn upside down when they got drilled by the 49ers in Week 13. That started a spiral and Philly would go on to lose five of their final six games to end the season as they lost their grip on conference and their division. Their late season collapse led to a playoff match up with the Tampa Bay Bucs who snuck into the playoffs out of the NFC South. They got crushed 32-9 in a stunning result in the opening round and their season that was filled with so much hope came crashing to an end.

Star watch: Eagles

For Philly tonight is going to be a first glimpse at some familiar faces this season. In the Eagles first preseason game we didn’t see Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley or AJ Brown, but I’d be surprised if Nick Sirriani doesn’t want to get his guys some run under their new offensive coordinator. The same goes for Josh Sweat and Jalen Carter on the defensive end. Both sets of starters are going to have to used to playing under Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore. This preseason is as much for the coaches as it is for the players, and if the coordinators don’t have their guys out there, even for a few snaps, it’s going to be hard to get a measure of how things are progressing in Eagles camp.

Star watch: Patriots

It’s all about the Patriots QBs tonight from Gillette Stadium. Drake May will most likely get more than a series against the Eagles as the No. 3 overall pick looks to impress the home fans and the coaches as they continue their search for a QB1 in New England. We only got a small sample size in his preseason debut when he completed two of his three short passes on his only drive, but he passed for over 7,700 yards and 59 TDs with just 16 INTs in two years as North Carolina’s staring QB. That was enough to persuade the Pats to taking him with the third pick as they continue to seed Tom Brady’s heir.

Last game: Patriots

It was an ugly start to the preseason opener for both the Pats and the Panthers who punted the ball nine straight times before a single point was scored. Jacoby Brissett got the start at QB and played just a series before No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye took over under center. Neither could do much to move the ball, but Bailey Zappe finally marched the Pats down the field and into the end zone midway through the second quarter. The Pats went to half up by 7 points, as their defense held strong against an terrible looking Panthers offense. After seven Zappe drives, it was Joe Milton who came in a quarterback and finally brought some life to the game. A couple of escapes out of the pocket that turned into big plays, a field goal and a 38 yard TD pass to Justin Jackson was enough to seal the game with 9:00 to go in the 4th quarter.

as.com

Last game: Eagles

Jalen Hurts didn’t play in the preseason opener against the Ravens last week. Neither did very many of the starters we expect to see playing in Week 1. Instead it was new QB Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee headlining under center. Neither had tremendous games, but they didn’t struggle as much as Jake Elliott who missed an extra point and a field goal to take the lead with 21 seconds to go, but a fumble from the Ravens gave the ball back to the Eagles at the BAL 31 yard line. Elliott got his redemption with a game winning 49 yard field goal as the clock expired.

We are live from Gillette

Hello everyone and welcome to Foxborough where the Patriots are back home after for their second game of the preseason as they continue their search for a Week 1 starter at quarterback. First year coach Jerod Mayo has his work cut out for him as he takes over on the sidelines after one of the most successful coaching reigns in NFL history. The Eagles on the other hand are looking to bounce back from a disastrous end to the season in which they finished the year losing five of their last six before getting bounced from the playoffs. Philly went out and brought in some brand new coordinators on both sides of the ball, so the next couple games could be a good chance for the starters to gets a few more snaps before the start of the regular season.
