Pittsburgh Steelers confirm Matt Canada will return in 2023
Pittsburgh’s director of communications Burt Lauten has confirmed to ESPN that Matt Canada will return to the Steelers as offensive coordinator next season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers offense was the seventh-worst offense in the NFL last season, only mustering 18.1 points per game. The ultimate blame has to be shouldered by the architect of their attack, offensive coordinator Matt Canada. You might expect that his head would be the first on the chopping block, but management has full confidence that things will turn around next year.
According to a report by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers plan to keep Canada on as offensive coordinator and he will return for the 2023 season. Subsequently, Burt Lauten, director of the Pittsburgh communications office, confirmed to ESPN the report’s veracity.
Despite outside criticism, quarterback Kenny Pickett and running back Najee Harris have shown their support for the 50-year-old coach. Pittsburgh’s offense changed after the bye week as they shifted focus to the running game, leading to a 7-2 run. Their best rushing performance was against the New Orleans Saints where they picked up 217 yards on the ground, followed by 198 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Vacancy in New England
The New England Patriots currently have an offensive coordinator vacancy available and are shopping for the right candidate. The AFC East powerhouse requested permission to interview Keenan McCardell, Minnesota’s wide receivers coach. In addition, they have spoken with their own tight ends coach Nick Caley about stepping up to fill the position.
Jets on the attack
Nathaniel Hackett’s experiment with the Denver Broncos may have failed, but the New York Jets are interested in poaching him to fill their own offensive coordinator needs for the 2023 season. Prior to coaching in Denver, Hackett had a successful stint as offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
