Saints sign Jarvis Landry

With few of their team needs fulfilled in the NFL draft, the New Orleans Saints have picked up their second high profile free agent in as many weeks.

With local boy and LSU Tigers legend Tyrann Mathieu heading back home, it seems that the New Orleans Saints decided that one wasn’t enough. They have done it again. Five-time Pro Bowler Jarvis Landry has signed a one-year deal with his hometown franchise.

After being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2014, the Lutcher High School and LSU Tiger standout went on to pick up three Pro Bowl appearances and set the NFL record for most receptions over the first four years of his career.

In 2018, he was traded to the Cleveland Browns and signed a five-year $75.5 million contract. During his first two seasons with Cleveland, he made the Pro Bowl both years and was the Browns top receiver. After dealing with injury and missing most of the 2021 season, he was released by the Browns last month.

The Saints picked him up and will work him alongside draft pick Chris Olave and Michael Thomas, himself a two-time All Pro who also missed the entire 2021 season due to injury. The New Orleans offense also includes sizzling running back Alvin Kamara, a Pro Bowler in each of his first five seasons in New Orleans.

An old rival from Landry’s LSU day is Jameis Winston, who will now be feeding Landry the ball. Winston led the Saints to a 5-2 record last season before an injury prematurely ended his season. The Saints still managed to finis the 2021 season 9-8 before failing just short of the postseason. With these acquisitions, the Saints are looking more and more certain of making a return trip to the playoffs in 2022.

The only thing left to do for the Saints would be to pick up that third Louisiana legend free agent, Odell Beckham Jr. The LSU trifecta would be complete and the Saints would have, hands-down, the most potent offense in the NFL. Ah, well, I suppose one can dream.
