What’s next for Brendan Sorsby? Supplemental Draft now likely after NCAA denial

After the NCAA denied his appeal, Brendan Sorsby’s only clear path back to football may be the NFL supplemental draft.

Betting on his own team could put TTU quarterback Brendan Sorsby at risk of a rare NCAA punishment - permanent loss of eligibility.

Update:

Brendan Sorsby’s college career appears to be over. Now the question is what comes next.

After the NCAA officially denied Texas Tech’s appeal to reinstate the quarterback’s eligibility, Sorsby is left without a path back to the college field. The decision, which stems from his admitted gambling activity while enrolled at previous programs, effectively closes one door, and forces another into focus. That door leads to the NFL.

The supplemental draft becomes the center of attention for Sorsby

With the NCAA ruling final on the eligibility front, the most immediate option for Sorsby is the NFL supplemental draft. The league’s lesser-known entry point allows players who are no longer eligible for college football to declare outside of the traditional draft cycle. This year’s deadline is June 22, creating a narrow window for Sorsby to decide whether to take that route.

If he declares, teams can bid on him using future draft picks, a process that often limits how aggressively franchises pursue prospects, even ones with high upside.

From a football standpoint, Sorsby’s ability has never been in doubt. During his 2025 season at Cincinnati, he showed dual-threat potential with strong production both through the air and on the ground. That performance helped position him as a legitimate NFL prospect before his eligibility situation took center stage.

Now, teams must weigh that talent against the circumstances that led to his NCAA ban.

NFL interest - but hesitation remains

Some early speculation has linked teams like the New York Jets to Sorsby as a potential developmental option. However, not every organization appears eager to take the risk.

Concerns around decision-making, league perception, and precedent all factor into whether a team would be willing to spend a future draft pick on a player coming out of a situation like this. The supplemental draft, historically, has been a cautious marketplace.

Sorsby’s situation is also not yet entirely settled. His legal team is still pursuing action in Lubbock County District Court, arguing that his gambling behavior should be considered within the context of a diagnosed addiction and mental health treatment. A ruling is expected before mid-June, which could influence his next move.

However, the NCAA’s decision and the court case operate independently, meaning the clock toward the supplemental draft continues to tick regardless.

For now, Sorsby’s future comes down to timing and opportunity. He has to declare for the supplemental draft by June 22 while waiting on a legal ruling that may or may not change his status. And he has to hope an NFL team is willing to take a chance on him. It’s a complicated crossroads for a player once viewed as a rising quarterback prospect.

And with his college eligibility officially gone, the next step will define whether his football career continues or stalls before it truly begins.
