There have been reports of gunfire near Union Station along the Kansas City Chief’s Super Bowl parade route. Police say that between 10 and 15 revelers have been injured, with one person deceased. According to News Press Now sports director Jacob Meikel, who was on the scene, the shoots rang out roughly 10 to 15 minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs exited the stage in front of Union Station.

Although Kansas City Police were unable to provide an update on the conditions of those who had been injured, KSHB 41 reported that three were in critical condition, with the condition of five more described as “serious”. Authorities are asking the public for help. Anyone that witnessed the shooting is requested to meet with Kansas City PD at the southwest corner of Pershing Road and Main Street.

Two armed people have been taken into custody. The gunshots were said to have come from near the garage of the former train station that now serves as a museum and several were struck.

Video from the site of the incident showed a chaotic scene with people sheltering away from the entrance as police officers running into the building with weapons drawn.

Kansas City Chief of Police statement confirms number of deceased and injured at Chiefs parade

In a news conference, Chief of Police Stacey Graves released the following statement on what had taken place, confirming the number of deceased and injured revelers, as well that two had been taken into custody. She also said she had heard fans had assisted in officers in apprehending one of the shooters.

“The shots were fired as the parade concluded near Union Station. Officers were immediately on the scene and ran towards danger, with one suspect immediately followed on foot. Two people were immediately taken into custody, while officers administrated life-sustaining aid and called in the fire department for extra help.

“We are still gathering information but we can confirm one of our victims has been declared deceased. We don’t have an exact number of people who were victims of a gunshot wound but 10 to 15 people are injured right now. We don’t have any updates on the conditions of the victims just yet, we do not believe any children have been injured.

Two people have been taken into custody. Two bad actors are why we are here right now. It’s going to take a little bit to determine what led to the shooting”.

“I’ve been told some fans got involved in the apprehension or pursuit of one suspect, although I can’t confirm that, it’s what I’ve heard.”

Graves, who emphasised the bravery of officers who sought to apprehend the shooters on a number of occasions, also spoke of her anger at what had happened and declared “this is not Kansas City”.

This story is still developing and this article will be updated as more information is available. As part of her statement, Graves revealed Kansas City Police will also be issuing further updates via their Twitter/X feed, which is where they originally informed the public of the incident.
