Stunning stat shows Josh Allen gets extra protection with the Bills

The Buffalo Bills captured the No. 2 seed in the AFC, placing their quarterback into genuine MVP contention.

When asked whether Josh Allen should be crowned NFL Most Valuable Player, his Buffalo Bills teammates had a succinct response. “Just turn the tape on,” Bills safety Damar Hamlin replied.

Hamlin has a point. Allen’s form this season has been relentlessly impressive, helping his team to a 13-4 record and the No. 2 seed in a competitive AFC. Allen has led the Bills to 30 points or more on 12 occasions this season, while committing only eight turnovers. That ranks as the joint-lowest in the NFL since 1933.

But there’s another statistic which truly outlines the strength of this Bills team. Not only do they have, in Allen, a supremely gifted and confident passer, but they have been able to support him with a league-leading offensive line.

The Bills offensive line only allowed 14 sacks in the entire 2024 regular season, by far the fewest in the league. In fact, it’s the fewest recorded by any team since 2009. This incredible record is not just a one-off, the Bills also had the fewest sacks in the previous regular season.

Josh Allen gets Christmas gift from teammates

The Bills' offensive unit has starred this year and has been the platform for the team’s success. Speaking recently, Bills edge rusher Von Miller made clear that there’s a real appreciation within the team of what Allen brings.

“He’s just got a special aura about him,” Miller explained. “I’ve played with some great ones — [Matthew] Stafford, and of course Peyton [Manning] — and he is one of those guys. I’m witnessing something different right now, and I can’t put my finger on it."

That feeling of appreciation even manifested itself in a special Christmas gift, from the Bills' offensive linemen to Allen. There’s an NFL tradition that quarterbacks get a gift for their linemen to say thank you. This year, the Bills did things a little differently.

The linemen clubbed together to get Allen a customised diamond necklace, baring the No. 17 jersey and the letters ‘MVP’. Bills tackle Dion Dawkins wrote in a post on Instagram: “Merry Christmas to our MVP.”

Looking ahead to the postseason, Allen has the chance to live up to that billing and lead the Bills to a first-ever Super Bowl triumph. There were two AFL championships in the 1960s before the NFL merger and the infamous quartet of Super Bowl losses in the early 1990s. Allen could finally be the man to deliver the Super Bowl to Buffalo.
