Has a Super Bowl Halftime Show ever won an Emmy before?
The Emmy Awards are known for honoring the best of television, and the Pepsi-sponsored halftime show has been recognized for Best Variety Special, which is frequently awarded to live musicals and Tony Awards broadcasts.
This year's Emmy for Outstanding Live Variety Special went to the NBC telecast of the halftime show that aired on February 13. The special was officially titled 'The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent'.
This is the first time a Super Bowl Halftime Show has won in this category. The award was presented to executive producers Shawn Carter, Desiree Perez and Jesse Collins; co-executive producers Dionne Harmon and Dave Meyers; supervising producer Aaron B. Cooke; as well as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.
“I am nervous, man. Jay is watching” executive producer Collins said as part of his acceptance speech, referring to star Jay-Z. “First on behalf of the fellow executive producers and our performers, we would like to thank the television academy for this incredible honour,” he continued.
“It’s amazing. This is the first time this show has ever won this award and it’s so incredible to be a part of this moment. It took an incredible team to pull this together and I thank you all.”
