With a handful of teams in the league on the hunt for a quarterback, perhaps it won’t be long before the play caller finds a new home.

The veteran QB sees his time with the Bears come to an end which leaves the question, ‘where to next?’

Chicago Bears release QB Nick Foles

According to a statement from his agent Justin Schulman, former Super Bowl MVP and Chicago Bears quarterback Nick Foles has been released by the franchise. In his two years with the Bears Foles made eight starts, but later saw his minutes cut down with the arrival of fellow QB Justin Fields who was picked by Chicago in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. While some expected Foles to be traded, the Bears seemingly came to an agreement with the player thereby allowing him the opportunity to choose his next destination. With that in mind there are actually a number of teams including the Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans, who are currently on the hunt for a play maker, meaning Foles shouldn’t be out in the cold for too long.

The story of QB Nick Foles

At 33 years old the quarterback has seen a career in which he has played for five different teams since he was first selected by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 88th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Just a year later he would see himself named a Pro Bowler in 2013 before going on to make steady progress with the Eagles, finally spear heading the franchise’s first Super Bowl win in 2017. In that very game Foles was named MVP after turning in a performance that saw him throw for 373 yards and three touchdowns as Philadelphia beat the Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII. Incidentally in the three games that he played during that same postseason, Foles completed 72.6% of his passes with six touchdowns and one interception.

There would be one more playoff victory for Foles as an Eagle back in 2018 before he put pen to paper on a multiyear deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. That relationship, however, was short lived as the QB was promptly traded to Chicago in 2020 after just one season that saw him start only four times. Indeed, Foles was offloaded in a deal that saw a fourth round Draft pick come in the opposite direction. His first season with the Bears would go somewhat better with the QB completing 64.7% of his passes to the tune of 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Eventually Foles would lose his starting spot mid season to to Mitchell Trubisky, who notably led the Bears to the playoffs, but ultimately went on to join the Buffalo Bills during the last offseason.

What was last season like for Nick Foles?

In truth, Foles didn’t see much game time last season, making just one start which was a 25-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks back in Week 16. Interestingly, Foles went 24 of 35 for 250 yards in that game, including the game-winning touchdown pass with 1:01 left on the clock. In total Foles owns a 31-29 record as a starting NFL quarterback - including the playoffs. The veteran QB has completed 62.4% of his passes with a total of 82 touchdowns and 43 interceptions in regular season play. Where the post season is concerned, Foles completed 68.1% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Where ever he plays next, rest assured the team will be getting an experienced quarterback with credible numbers on his CV.
